Whose Karate is it anyway?
Because of a move, I've started a new dojo. My old style and my current style are very similar. For the most part, there are small differences and I've been able to adapt to them fairly easily. However, I do have a couple of sticking points on which I'm having trouble reconciling. I don't agree with ...

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. They've been helpful.

What do you have in your pocket?
When I was into running, I would carry a little can of pepper spray in my hand. That way, if there was any trouble, it was already in my hands pointing in the right direction ready to go. I wouldn't carry anything like that in my pocket, though. Probably spend too much time fumbling with it to have ...

Role Models
Role model, I think I'm a bit too old to have a role model as I see too many cracks in people now-a-days compared to when I was younger. However, I do admire certain people with their skills, attitudes, or what they've endured.

Glass Door
This is more of a safety topic rather than a martial arts topic. Over the years, I've heard that it's very easy to break into a home through a sliding glass door. To combat this, I've always place a sizeable, solid wood pole or block in the track. My logic was that if someone were able to pop the ...

So how do I learn?
A few years ago I read a book called 'The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense' by Suzette Haden Elgin. It was, in my opinion, a well-written book and incredibly helpful. She identifies various attacks and has suggestions on how to handle them. The author has also written more books along those lines ...

Ladies Fighting
Yes, I believe all sorts of self-defense scenarios should be taught, including fighting 'girl fights'. However, I can understand why they aren't addressed very often in most MA classes. Correct me if I'm being naive here, if I get into a cat fight with a gal, then I'm only going to be a bit ...

I haven't seen the show, so I'll have to go off what you've written here. There are so many things which are wrong with what you wrote (the scenario, not your writings), it's hard to decide to where to begin. It makes me think of Jodi Foster in The Accused. (I think that's the name of the movie ...

Attacked in the shower
I would assume that if some guy was just after my money, he'd make a snatch and grab. Meaning, he wouldn't come into the shower while I was in there, he'd use that time (and listen to the water running) to rummage around the house grabbing anything of value he could find.

Why women can't hit hard
I'd like to offer a theory on Dana's ponderings about why it takes women twice* as long to hit, as compared to guys. My theory: sports. From what I've seen, most guys have grown up playing sports. Most women I know haven't. I know there are exceptions, but generally that's what I've found.
