Go for the eyes and the throat - ideally the vagus and phrenic nerves if you aim to do serious damage. Also of course snap fingers, stamp on the knees and groin if you get the cance.

I have that video and the acting is beyond lousy!! However for Shotokan fans there are a few seconds worth watching. The action takes place at the then JKA headquarters dojo, where a demonstration of kata takes place. The three demonstrators are Kanazawa, Mikami, and I think Takaura ie. the first ...

The Sufi teacher Idries Shah observed "At first you are not worthy of the robes and implements of the Sufi. Later you do not need them. Finally you may need them for the sake of others."
Sounds about right to me when thinking about grades, ranks, titles etc etc.

Yes. If you have a strong wooden beam on the side of the garage, or a brick wall you can buy a kind of tripod affair which fastens to the wall and from which you can hang the bag - usually available from martial arts supply stores. Of course if you know someone with a welder you can make your own ...

Why don't you make yourself a punchbag? You can:-
1. Get an old military kitbag and fill it full of sawdust or old clothes. A core of old magazines surrounded by foam rubber or cloth works well.
2. Roll a load of old newspapers into a fairly solid tube, tape that up securely, then tape a layer of ...

Ted Kresge

I have been searching for years for a copy of Ted Kresge's Encylopeadia of Karate and Related Martila arts which I think was published in Chicago in the late 1960s.
Does anyone have a copy they would like to sell or make a photocopy for me? Of course I will cover all costs.

I think you need to explain the reasons for the particular aspect of etiquette under consideration.
For example if we look at the example of bowing to a photograph you would need to explain that bowing in this context has no religious dimension. It is a form of respect expressed in an oriental ...

Ok Mike,
in the Shotokan version of Heian/Pinan 5. You have done the jump, x block, augmented block, then you turn to the rear, left hand sweeping across the face right hand 'spearing' down. Take the left hand as a parry/intercept to an incoming attack. Slip the attack while simultaneously turning ...

For what it is worth the application of the two 'groin grabs' in Heian 5 that I teach is exactlly the same as the illustration posted above. (without the hair ribbons etc of course)

Thank you Andrew for your kind words. I am a little obsessive about this strange pastime of ours and I am always pleased to find someone who seems as keen as I am.

The magazine may hold the copyright on the whole article (ie including illustrations), but the copyright of the text is usually held by the author, or at least that is what is I believe about my own scribblings.
