Tom-

Say what would you do if you knew someone in the dojo was either in a gang, associating with gang members or thinking about joining one. Is it right to let your Sensei know, or let him or her find out on their own

Wow! This almost deserves it's own thread. Good job!

I have pondered this a ...

Jeff,
Ha! You ask if showing modeling poses and showing kata are the same? I knew someone would pick that up!

Good on ya! I kinda dangled that out there as bait.

No, the potential impact of the SHOWING may not be the same. On the other hand, I am not convinced that showing a move here or a kata ...

Jeff-
I struggle with this myself.

We've all heard that PDoK (Public Display of Karate) is bad. On the other hand, to many of us, karate or martial arts are a significant and influential part of our lives.

Do my musician friends refrain from humming in public? Do my model friend intentionally ...

Hmmmmm.

This is a tough one. I just wrote an article for our Dojo newspaper that expounded on the importance of exploring stances and the movements to and from them in kata.

I've always thought of stance as the root from which I hang my leaves and brances (kicks, blocks, and punches).

Lately ...

Robb-san,
You taught me a lot in a very sort time (like 2 hours?).

In particular, your comments about squaring the shoulders toward an opponent stuck with me. I like to drop that comment on newer students. It makes me seem more clever than I really am!

Wew wish you and Neide Sensei were not ...

Chris-
I agree completely.
One of Hidiyoshi’s great strengths was identifying and satisfying the motivations of others in the completion is his own (Hidiyoshi’s) goals.

Hidiyoshi was more successful because he used both men as mentor's. He found the strengths and weakness in both and blended ...

What if a Bird won't sing?

I’ve thought long and hard before deciding to post this in a forum. However, there is no other place I can hope to find others with an interest in what is admittedly a bit esoteric. I looked for a forum that would be an appropriate place for this discussion. Bill’s forum description states that ...

I just read a very pertinent quote in a Yoshikawa novel last night. I can't quote it directly at this time, but it goes something like this:

When someone without the proper abilities seeks to rule a nation, the world will be enveloped by disaster.

(excerpt paraphrased from Taiko , Eiji Yoshikawa ...

Panther-san,

He thinks it's coming and not too far away. He mentioned that he sold his house and just bought a secluded spot waaaaaaay out in the woods "somewhere".

Very interesting. I just did EXACTLY the same thing... Bought a farmhouse on property that is very secluded, in the woods, with an ...

I wish you would quit recommending books.

I am going broke here trying to keep up!

AND i am anxiously awaiting my "Lost Kata" DVD!

Tough subject.

Strong feelings on either side of the argument do each person credit. That one cares is a good start.

This may be way too old to bother, but here's something I found very interesting:

Of at least 30 people I know that took this test, less than 5 imagined a RED HAMMER.

This clearly contradicts the persented statistics.

Wonder where the stats came from?

Wonder if I am missing the point?

Great qusetion! This is a subject that I contemplate every night in the dojo.

I try to use inflection, tone, volume, and duration as techniques to both entertain and motivate. Wanna keep a 10 year old motivated? Monotone ain't the way! Want to get your students into that "Glare in the eye" mode? An ...
