I have a small RC injury to my left shoulder...I was told by the therapist not to do any overhead weight training, especially bench presses and clean and jerks, which i was doing much of.

Any 'pushing' horizontally and pulling, such as in overhead pull downs and in OK.

After using these rotating handles in shoulder RC feels much better and my overall upper body explosive strenght seems to have increased.

Often we will develop repetitive motion injuries from doing the same thing for long periods of time. Many of us athletes have had RC injuries at one point in time, and have had to deal with the pain and inflammation while gutting through our activities.

Often it's just a change that solves the problem. In your case, you found a device that challenged your body in a different way from what you were doing before.

Every training routine should be periodized into roughly 12-week cycles. After a cycle is done, you should engage in some "active rest" before starting over again. And when you do, you need to shuffle the exercise deck. Too much of any one thing over time takes its toll.

In my case, I found a Strive adjustable variable resistance deltoid machine that scratched my RC itch. I would do this to "pre-exhaust" my delts before running over and doing overhead dumbbell presses. If I listened to the experts like the ones talking to you, I never would have solved the problem. But this special kind of therapy got my shoulders back in balance. And how did that work? Well... the machine pre-exhausted the major muscle groups in myriad ranges of motion before my overhead presses were done. Thus I had to use much less weight on the dumbbell overheads, and ended up using mostly the very muscles and tendons that were so weak to start with. That was just what the doctor (Bill) ordered.

If you step back and think about it, there are important lessons here. We're all acting as blind men touching the elephant. We're all touching the elephant, only in different places. We're all right here. The only think needed is putting that big picture together.

P.S. All should be in touch with a doctor when doing this kind of work. Sometimes people have "compartment syndromes" in the shoulder that only surgery can correct. Be careful, and consult a sports physician. (Forget about the couch potato MDs.)

Thanks Bill...very good advice and I will be careful with it. PC did send me to Beth Israel Sports medicine ...and I did see a specialist.

FireDragon Challenge - 2011

We are anticipating a very large group participating in this year's FireDragon Challenge at the Feb 11 & 12th of February WinterFest.

I'm trying to find the results of last year's SummerFest challenge and will be posting them as soon as they are found.

I'm looking for a one or two paragraph description of the challenge to submit to the Newspapers and websites and am hoping that one of my friends here on the forums will submit a couple for consideration. (credit will be given when published)

Other posts relevant to the challenge will be added to this thread.
