Euphemism of the day

Post by Bill Glasheen »

I caught this story today on SI.com. The funny - or not-so-funny - part of the story is what's NOT said. It's easy enough to read between the lines. I've seen it happen before.

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Indians pitcher Nick Hagadone will be out at least two months after having surgery to fix a broken left arm the team says he injured in frustration.

Hagadone had a screw inserted into his broken left forearm, which he hurt following an appearance last week against Tampa Bay. Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said the left-hander's injury was "self-inflicted."

The Indians optioned Hagadone to the minor leagues and then placed him on their minor league disqualification list. The Indians claim they don't have to pay him while he's sidelined.

The baseball players' union may file a grievance against the club if it withholds Hagadone's pay. His next scheduled payday is Sunday.

The line on Hagadone the day of the "self inflicted" wound:

0.2 innings pitched
2 earned runs
2 hits
2 walks

That's not counting the 2 runers on base that he allowed to score which were attributed to the pitcher he relieved (Justin Masterson). Sum total of runs allowed with 2 outs of pitching - 4.

Current ERA = 6.39

Anger management issues?

More of the same...
CINCINNATI -- Washington rookie Bryce Harper will miss a couple of days after he took an angry swing and his own bat accidentally hit him near the eye.

Harper later batted with blood trickling down his face during Friday night's 7-3 win at Cincinnati.

The 19-year-old Harper went 0 for 5 and struck out three times. At one point, he took a frustrated whack at a wall in the tunnel leading to the clubhouse.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson said the barrel of the bat bounced off the wall and hit Harper next to the left eye, causing a gash and welt. He got bandaged, but was sent for treatment afterward because it was bleeding.

Johnson says Harper probably needs to be stitched up and will out for a couple of days.

Rumor has it that his fellow teammates are now calling him Bam Bam.

You can't try to control a player's passion. Guys have been known to take out their frustrations on water coolers, clubhouse showers and countless pieces of equipment.

You just have to hope that when the player erupts he manages not to hurt himself. Such was not the case with Carlos Quentin who, in 2009 while leading the league in home runs, got frustrated after fouling off a pitch and punched his bat.

The slugger ended up breaking his wrist and missed most of the regular season.

I mean, if you're going to punch your bat at least make sure the at-bat is over.
'roid rage anyone? :-P

In yet another frustration-related injury, Rockies franchise shortstop Troy Tulowitzki unleashed his fury on his bat after being taken out of the game in the seventh inning.

Tulo pounded his maple bat into the ground and it shattered, slicing his hand and sending him to the DL.

If this whole baseball thing doesn't work out for him, he always has a career as a rock star waiting for him.

Now we get into some kicking... 8)

Oliver Perez was once one of the best young pitchers in baseball. With his career in a tailspin, at least he can always look back and laugh on one of his injuries.

Perez was frustrated after a poor outing for the Pirates in 2005 and needed to take it out on something. He walked through the dugout into the clubhouse, looking for something to unload upon.

The poor recipient of his anger happened to be the laundry cart, which Perez kicked, breaking his toe in the process. The incident landed Perez on the DL.

The laundry cart played out the rest of its career and retired in 2008.
