At its most basics...kata teaches a plethora of body mechanics. Such as, transitions, posture, proper breathing, focus, hip movements, footwork, execution of technique, stances, and applications, to name just a few.

We either choose to train in according to any given style or we don't.

If we make the choice of any particular style...then train in Kata; that's where your style is. Train in conceptual exchanges with a partner; this is where the style can be applied...then apply those exchanges against the most common street attacks.

Then understand that today you will most likely be against a weapon...knife or blunt instrument...or multiple opponents...and learn about the force continuum.
