I know that not everyone agrees that canned "instructional tapes" are of any benefit, but
I wonder if anyone out there has any recommendations for a beginner grasping for the basic movements.

I, myself find Mr Mattson's tapes very useful. But that is only because I studied for four years in a dojo. The Army moved me away from any dojos and I've been away for the last ten years. I use the tapes to augment my practice and to refresh my memory. But you can't begin with a tape. For one, there isn't anyone there to correct your mistakes. If you wish to learn, practice with all your might, all your heart, all your mind, and by all means practice in a dojo.
