Messenger vs. the Message

Post by Lori »

On Ego:

The mantra is that ego should have no place in the martial arts. However I've heard it said (and have to agree) that the MA attracts some of the biggest egos to walk the earth. One can also find the humblest souls you will ever meet. You can find it all - as you can in most any field/organization.

Teachers and Maniacs:
Sometimes the hardest teachers are the best for a particular student. Sometimes the gentler way is better. Depends upon the student and my own feelings are that a student will gravitate to the type of teacher he needs. If limited options are available - perhaps gritting teeth and learning in spite of personality or other conflicts can teach even more valuable lessons.

On inconsistencies:
A piece of advice that came to me long ago... and I have found invaluable:

Beware of those who act stupid or ignorant - they are more often than not wise to you and may be setting you up...

FWIW my fellow karateka.

Peace,
Lori
