Drunk from the Internet! Love it! His lawyer should know drunk drivers go to jail, in spite of their condition.
The most interesting part of your post is that people who PUI (Post under the influence) can be located and dealt-with, rather quickly.
I wonder how people feel about 'hackers'. . . you know, the ones who break into secure computers just for the thrill. I'm a little concerned that a 15 year old kid can hack his way into our government's most sensitive agencies. Who is to say the Chinese or Russians don't have a few talented 15 year olds willing to do the same.

Intoxication
Yes, drunks and those stoned on other things go to jail, big time, for what they do. If what this man said/did was a crime, then Internet Intoxication won't help him much.
Talented 15 year olds
By now, you all heard about the Fulan Gong(sp) religious group being persecuted in China. Their website(s), both here and abroad are being hacked and dismantled. Guess where authorities are tracing the hackers from? China.

Internet intoxication. Wow...let's do a case history for the New England Journal of Medicine. The title has that certain Je ne sait quois. Legal and medical scholars will write about it for years to come. This, by the way, is the label attributed by the defense lawyer for a certain Mr. Campbell who was caught sending a threat across the internet.
The stage is Columbine High School. Dozens of students were killed or permanently maimed by a couple of teenagers with a few missing synapses in the emotion-processing region of the brain. An entire community was and still is traumatized by the events. Last fall the student body returned to a rebuilt high school. By the end of football season, their team had won the state championship. A sense of normalcy was just starting to return.
And then Mr. Campbell from the state of Florida (I believe) was engaging in an internet chat with a female student from Columbine - three days (+/-) before the Christmas break. He told her not to go to school the next day. He told her that a job needed to be finished. He told her that if she interfered, that there would be consequences. He spoke of blood and violence. But this brave female student reported the conversation. Yes, the ISP had records. Yes, the ISP traced the dialogue to the perpetrator. And he was caught.
'I didn't mean what I was typing' he declared on the Today show this January 11th. 'It was an act...it wasn't really me.' And then after his clean-scrubbed appeal to the nation and Katie Couric, his lawyer gets on and speaks of "internet intoxication." Oh...the poor victim. I am beginning to feel compassion for this man who says he caused hurt to his mother.
NOT
I am angry about a loss of innocence. I am angry that someone like myself who is adamant about free speech has been forced to take measures to squelch the speech of dark, malevolent characters. I am angry that idiots on the web do not (or don't care to) understand the distinction between free speech and verbal assault. It is one thing to disagree. But to wish, act, or threaten harm on someone is entirely another matter.
I am angry that a series of events in the past year have made me realize that being a semi-public figure means that I must take measures to ensure the protection of others and myself.
I am happy you have representation, Mr. Campbell. It is the American way. Your rights need to be protected and your perspective needs to be heard. But I am not impressed with your false contrition. You are not sorry you did harm; you are sorry that you were caught and embarrassed yourself and everyone around you. And ignorance of the consequences of irresponsible behavior (at the very least) is no excuse. I applaud the attempt of your attorney to shield you from prison with his "everybody is a victim" defense. But I will be cheering when the jury doesn't buy it.
And I have no sympathy for anyone on this or any other internet forum that behaves in this or a similar manner. Debate, yes. Intense, spirited debate? I love it. A little bit of insult with the debate? I will gently reign you in.
But anarchy, malevolence, and harassment are the tools and ways of fools and cowards.

I cannot understand how anyone could mistake the Mr. Campbell in florida referred to in Bill's editorial with our own Bob Campbell, located in HK, but apparently a few people did. Or more accurately, a few took the opportunity to try and discredit Bill. Anyway, Bob asked me to post the following:
Dear Sensei
A small favor re: Bill Glasheen recent topic : Bye Bye Miss Amercian Pie
Firstly, there are so many people who love to stir up mischief and I wish to avoid such situations. I have received 4 or 5 Email from people who think Bill was making Vail references about me since the topic was about a certain Mr Campbell and the tragedy at Columbine High School
Of course Bills story has absolutely nothing to do with me.... that was very clear by the the way which Bill wrote his story which I thought was quite good.
My request is for you to inform our web Uechi friends that I am not the Mr. Campbell in question and the fact that I work for a Law Firm is mere coincidence .....
All the best to Bill and our Uechi friends

Bill said: "I applaud the attempt of your attorney to shield you from prison with his "everybody is a victim" defense."
I agree with most of your post except for this. I agree that a person deserves a defense, but I believe that the defense needs to be a reasonable one. I, for one, am very tired of lawyers grasping at straws in an attempt through glib persuasion to convince twelve people that there is some element of truth in their, what would be obvious anywhere except in a court of law, lies. I think there needs to be an ethic in the justice system whereby when there is no defense then there is no defense and the criminal should be made to take the responsability for their actions. The courtroom has become a battle of the better debater and I think that is truly sad.
Of course, ultimately, we as a society get what we deserve. We have travelled down the path of accepting that "everybody is a victim" and so we get what we deserve, but I hope that the general populace wakes up from the dream soon and recognizes that everybody is not a victim and people are responsible for their actions and conduct.
Osu!

To whom it may concern
I am delighted that a few individuals who can't read have made it possible for Bobby to come out of his Hong Kong shell and say hi. Please, George, send my best to him from both myself and Sandra.
For clarification purposes, let me help those who are still confused.
* The Mr. Campbell who threatened the Columbine high school student is from Florida (as I stated). Our own Sensei Campbell is a few miles from Florida (try Hong Kong).
* The Mr. Campbell who threatened the Columbine high school student is 17 years old. Our own Bobby is....39.
* The Mr. Campbell who threatened the Columbine high school student was only on every single news and news magazine show on NBC yesterday, January 11 (I counted at least 4 times). Our own Sensei Campbell is more likely to be found on a Hollywood classic :-)
* I referred to the 17-year-old as Mr. Campbell because I couldn't remember his first name. Still can't. I NEVER refer to our own Sensei Campbell as Mr. Campbell. I would instead choose one of the following: Sensei Campbell, Bobby, hey you with the refreshments..., the dude that kicked my ass.

This is a good one! Laughter is the best medicine.(Probably the only one for my cold.)

I hate it when sensei gets younger and I keep getting older. At this rate, BC will be a child martial arts prodigy again and I'll be his "sensei" (the "one that went before") NOT!
Year of the Dragon coming up. Should be auspicious for "dragon's beard" in old HK.
