The Emotive Side...

Often martial artists get caught up with finding and developing their strength and personal power. Sometimes along stereotypical lines of the "strong, silent" type -- a mono-dimensional character with no apparent weakness or feeling.

How can this be? As we plumb our inner depths to find strength, it would only make sense that we would encounter other aspects of ourselves. I believe strength is not unidimensional, that it comes from exploring and accepting the parts of the whole. Strength can be expressed in more ways than just squashing an opponent...

Ellis Amdur, a former columnist for Aikido Journal, writes often of journies into the other dimensions of the self. Here's a wonderful example of his writing:
