We study traditional karate very 'seriously ' > we develop strong kata and kumite and even formidable free sparring ! Ever wondered where all that went when " right now " you must use those 'skills' to stop a threat and it seems like you think and move like a klutz , hurting yourself in the process ?
Read this interesting soliloquy of recent < You are in the martial arts …you have ten years or more of training ; you get into a fight with someone without much training or experience .What're your odds? "Good" !
Right . Now this guy has training and /or experience . What're your odds now? "50/50" ?
Close enough . Now there's two guys , both without training but big and mean . Odds? I dunno , probably less than 50/50 , in all honesty !
Right . Now the same two guys with training/experience ! My odds ****** !
One guy with a knife? Ouch ! { James Collier}
The best argument yet for "force continuum " as previously related …as a start ! The thought of blending empty hands skills with weapons for the serious student of self defense ; the reality of a street fight exploding on you at very short range ; the need of empty hands skills to create time and distance in order for you to deploy a weapon [ knife > gun ] ….
For you teachers ….teaching the< right stuff > ; To paraphrase The great Cooper " we all go through phases of teaching things we don't fully understand ourselves ; the mistakes we make ; all the erroneous information we had to prove to ourselves did not work "
The teacher's job is much more than teaching the student to do some kata , conditioning and kumite , if he represents himself as a < self defense > instructor ! In the firearms / lethal force concept application , the term 'teacher' is being replaced with " confrontation management training specialist " Do we need to address our teaching roles more carefully ?
An important point made in an article is that martial artists should pay more attention to the work of Bruce Siddle , one of the foremost researchers of how to improve motor skill performance during a critical incident ! " his findings will help us all to understand why a particular technique will or will not work , and to take a critical look at what we teach and why "
Then Jeff Cooper , legendary real life gunfighter and gunners guru , indicates the extreme importance of mindset ! He relates the interview of Jan/10/ 17 > of Buffalo Bill ; < He would make up his mind to kill the other man before the other man had finished thinking > ; " That pretty much tells us what we need to know about mindset " {Cooper}
