....is Avoid_ Evade and Counter...in that order...

even if the avoiding/evading threatens our karate 'tough guy image' we have forged for ourselves because of the 'special knowledge/training' we believe we possess.

This can be a real problem for all of us, because it may cause the 'bring it on' mentality when the smart thing to do is to swallow hard and keep going.

Lethal force trainers point to the following:

1. Action should be reserved for situations in which circumstances are worth the risk of injury or death to you and possibly others.

2. Criminal and civil exposure will likely accompany any violent confrontation.
There are things worth fighting for, dying for, and getting sued over for. Your job is to learn to consider what these are ahead of time.

3. You also need to be cognizant of the fact that trouble can arrive at any time when least expected in the most unlikely circumstances, and that you may not come out the winner as you fantasize you will.

4. You also need to understand clearly that your perception and decision to act/not act…is a complicated process that includes personal bias, cultural heritage, incoming information and a rapidly unfolding situation that will create confusion in your mind and thus hesitation.

5. This goes to 'orientation' before the fight…and while in this mind state; you may well find yourself taken by surprise, even if you should have been past a 'surprise' _
