I was called at my very first dinner to tell a story..... And I told my story. The
Members voted unanimous I was telling a whopping lie!

However, when challenged to admit my story was a lie..... I could not because my outrageous story, about the Village People (you know their music, YMCA
Or In the Navy) stayed at my home in the Philippines. Which was TRUE.

FROM THE BOOK London's Strangest Tales, pages 309 and 310, printed in the year 1926, I shall repeat, word for word, what was on those pages.

Prime Minister Caught in a Brothel ??

No one really knows why clubs started in London, but the whole idea of
like-minded people getting together regularly to discuss mutual interests
seems to have been, in its origins, peculiarly British and the very finest
clubs were certainly based in London.

The first clubs included the Wolf Club, whose only qualification for membership was that a man had to have been forbidden to sing in the bath
by his wife.

The Lunar Society, whose scientifically minded members met when there was a full moon.

Then there was the Fly Fishers Club, whose members were addicted to
pursuing Trout by the most difficult means possible.

The Garrick Club, where actors and those associated in the media, were able to boast to each
other about how wonderful they were_

The Macaroni Club, whose members, according to a critic, were, upper class,
effeminate practitioners, with habits imported from Italy and other places in Europe where vices are tolerated.

The Coxcombs, were, legends say, pre-cursers to the Beefsteak Order and at a time where also known as the Sublime Society of Steaks.

They began in
they year 1735, in London at a place located on Irvings Street, near Piccadilly Square. OBB founding members met, bizarrely enough, to discuss the disgraceful tendencies of "leveling" by which they meant,
_The tendency, which cannot have been that common in early Eighteenth Century, London, for different classes to mix.

(Meaning.... they were terrible snobs )

The Order of Beefsteak members were supreme reactionaries who believed
That birth conferred a status / station in life, that neither success nor failure
Could change or affect ones station in life.

By 1926 the club was still meeting and some of Britain's most powerful reactionaries were members.

Unfortunately, they met in an old seedy house on the edge of Soho, London,
and at the time when London Police were taking a more than usually
enthusiastic interest in local Brothels.

On one particular summer evening, a Policeman saw four elderly and rather
Disreputable looking men enter a house. The Policeman made a written note
To the effect that "They Looked Highly suspicious" and they appeared eager
Not to want to be observed.

The Policeman called for reinforcements, convinced they were about to
Raid a Brothel.

They forced their way into the house and arrested four men..... Who happened to be, The Governor of the Bank of England, The
Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Prime Minster of England and the
Archbishop of Canterbury.

When their identities were revealed, the arresting Policeman refused to believe them and threatened them with further prosecution for attempting to impersonate their "betters" in High Society.

Despite the best efforts of the Order of Beefsteak in 1926, it seems that Class isn't always that Obvious

Hence, since 1926, The Order of Beefsteak members, tell true stories and whopping lies at each gathering to commemorate how 4 of its members, were arrested at a OBB dinner, where-in the Cops thought they were attending...A Brothel.

No Titles, No Last Names and........ No More Snobs belong to the OBB.
