10th Dan

This year at our summer camp to be organized by our great friend Buzz Durkin...
he will be performing and will be awarded the rank of 10th Dan.

And camp, as run by Buzzy this year, will be an extraordinary event in a spectacular place

http://www.uechiryubutokukai.com/summerfest.html

Being a 10th Dan is a complex, philosophical endeavor. The promoted individual must exhibit exceptional character and dedication to the art, understanding it with extreme depth. They must also be responsible enough to carry the art forward and develop future students in order to continue the tradition.

My friend Buzzy embodies all of these qualities and more.

It sure is...and this year's camp is one not to be missed...simply because Buzz Durkin is running it...

It will be a very special event at a fabulous venue. I also hope to see Art's student, Maurice, perform for his 7th Dan...

An outstanding, strong and precise, traditional Uechi practitioner, with no fluff changes to the katas.

There was a sense of tangible wonderment this year at Summer fest, the event being run by Buzz Durkin at the Hilton Double tree Hotel, certainly a time and a place to remember for all times to come.

As I sat there on the 10th Dan promotional board, I was struck with a sense of pride and awe for Buzzy as he calmly strode up before his peers for his Judan performance_ lean and in great shape.

As he settled into his Sanchin kata my mind flashed back to chapters 3 and 4 of his book “Success is Waiting” where as an Infantry Lt. _ he tells of his Vietnam experience of a life transforming Sanchin kata down in a jungle bunker awaiting the onslaught of 2000 North Vietnamese regulars advancing upon his depleted unit.

As the words of Sensei Mattson echoed in his ears “Don’t worry Buzz, all of our black belts have done well over there; you’ll be fine”_ he did his sanchin with his entire soul, connecting with something deep within himself_ a powerful calmness that he had never before experienced.

He emerged from the bunker in a sustained state of peace_
Uechi Ryu Karate and the Sanchin Kata had become part of him.
He was ready for anything…he waited.

Then the miracle: the North Vietnamese troops went entirely around his position_ no contact whatsoever.

This past Friday evening_ watching Buzzy perform a precise, powerful and yet very calm Sanchin _ found myself trying to identify with every possible feelings nuance he had experience then in Vietnam _ and was now experiencing amongst a veritable oasis of love and respect from all who attended camp.

Over the years I have always admired Buzzy’s whole moral code of living_ honor, integrity, training discipline, politeness, his looking after people, gentleness and generosity to us all of the Uechi brotherhood.

It was perhaps the ‘bunker sanchin’ that had imparted him the secrets of the special kind of qualities that comes from mind, heart and body_ with the most important of them all_ his ability to disregard his own ambitions, throw his ego out the door and to be the best he can be not just for himself but for the Uechi brotherhood, always elevating others before him.

Congratulations my dear friend.

i will always remember something that Mr. Durkin said to me once.
Every time you do a kata, you change who you are, just a little bit for the better. you become a better person.

Congratulations Sir. well deserved 10th Dan.
