The gentleman who posted the review messaged me which I appreciated. He is a FMA/Combatives instructor in Ottawa which makes me appreciate his review even more.

A great resources for teachers and the serious student

Rick Wilson has written an excellent book on empty hand responses to knife attacks. The language is clear and precise. Favouring a technical vocabulary rather than the terminology of a specific martial art, Mr. Wilson has written a book accessible to both martial artists and defensive tactics teachers regardless of their training background. Mr. Wilson proposes a curriculum in which proper body mechanics are emphasized and the responses taught are principle-based and layered in a progressive fashion. This book should be a welcome addition to the library of anyone teaching or looking to learn knife defence skills.

I've studied martial arts for years and still learned a lot about knife attacks I didn't know. I just wish I had this book when I first started training.

Thank you

Reviews make a big difference for authors and have a large influence when people are looking at books by people they don't know.

I greatly appreciate them.

If my first book showed me anything being in the editing stage is still a long way from publication but for those who read this forum here is a hint of where it goes.

Now You See It, Now You Don't: Using Empty Space in Self Defence

“The ability to use empty space for self defence can turn an average martial artist into a great one. It can make what you do seem like magic when it is the proper application of a principle. It is a principle that transcends styles and systems. Once you see it you will always see it.

You will see why a technique works sometimes (you used empty space) and doesn't others (you didn't use empty space.)

You will see that often an instructor is saying do one thing but then they do another (using empty space) to make the technique work.

You will see that often the practitioners you admire most use empty space whether they talk about it or not or even know that they use it.

The ability to use Empty Spaces will increase the effectiveness and efficiency of your practice tremendously.

I hope this book helps you find Empty Space. By the time you are done reading the title will be perfectly clear.”

A hard book to write and illustrate but I think it works.

Thanks Rick, looking forward to it as I teach mostly evasive/flanking techniques with any strike. All found in Uechi kata conceptually.

Should be a great book.
