"Operation Mongoose" was a pet project of Duntov and was aided by top execs but not endorsed by GM. President Eric Donner of GM sent a letter directly to Duntov to abide by the 1957 racing ban. It is still unknown how those cars were snuck out of GM. But the 550 hp alloy block didn't happen and the cars ran 327 iron blocks. They had to get weber carbuerators instead of the fuel injection which was the original plan.
Although helped through the "back door" the cars were not officially recognized by GM. What some GM employees did after hours helped the project, but not enough. Ford went on to fame with those cars. Duntov would have crushed them. He was a brilliant engineer and racer.

Most of this comes from Corvette by Richard Nichols, but I have other info from years of Corvette magazines and other Corvette books.

My Z06 has been described. It is my 6th and probably last Corvette.

It cannot Compete with the new marks of the Z06 or even the standard Corvette-shceduled to go to 700 and 500hp in 7.0 and 6.2 liter form.

The immediate standard Corvette features a 6.0 litre short block based, on the famous '327' block.

The Old 7 litre Block's origins are not known to me at this sitting.

The current 7.0litre Z06 is based, I beleive on this short block in cast aluminum form.

although of the same heritage, and convertible to 7.0 litre for modest (about $12000) fees my little 405hp 5.7litre is no longer the King Kong Of Corvettes.

I rather favor the C-3 and C-5 variants out of the ones I owned. The "shark' concept introduced by Ankus Duntov was not my favorite, but I quite enjoeyed the used one I picked up for $3500 in 1970.

Sold it for $5000 and thought I was a real smartass.

There's a whole host of tuners John that could make that Z06 go as fast as you want.

I remember my brother telling me about a Doug Rippie motor sports car which went by him in his ZR1 like he was standing still. But he was going 150 at the time. A lot goes on in Pennsylvania during Carlisle. You should go to that "Mecca" if you haven't.

C-2 1963 to 1968
C-3 1968 to ?
C-4 ? to 1998 (they did not build them one year)
C-5 1999 to 2004
C-6 Present

I have a beautiful Corvete Book my wife gave me going thru the C-5s and it has pictures of virtually every Corvette the family has owned.

I will post the pictures of the models my family had in their original paint scheme as I beleive the book has examples of all of them.

The C3 ended in 1982. No 1983 model year. 1984-1996 was the C4.

Bikes are nice, however my nephew had a 73 before he got married, and all you have to do is park it at the beach and wait for your next girlfriend.

I don't know if that's true of bikes, or the girls you attract.

How much Stryke?, those are usually reasonable.

I bet I could hunt around and find a high mileage 77 for less than 10K around here.

Drove by a 82 collectors edition for sale and resisted stopping today.
