Disenfranchised Mac User

I don't know if anyone else has figured this one out, but here goes:

As Macintosh user (G4 400, internet explorer 5) I am struggling to figure out how to get the videos on this (uechi-ryu.com) site to work. I understand thy are in .wvm format (why, I don't know) and that Windows Media Player playes them. I downloaded version 7 for Mac, placed it into the plug-ins folder and voila! Nada. :x

I would be ever so greatfull to anyone who might be able to help me out with this problem.

NB :x

Because I drive a Mac G4 and run explorer 5.1, I went looking...

I finally found the video (I think) at

http://www.uechi-ryu.com/videos/u_kata.html

I couldn't even get connected to the download page - click on an icon, wait forever and get a "connection failure".

I'll try again later...

OK, edited to add:

got a response and both the .WMV clips and .asf(?) gave me code. I don't know why that happens - I have wmv 7 fairly new. I just think windows is an inferior product and fails all the time. I do my stuff in Quicktime, and I've never had it fail or people tell me it doesn't work.

Blaming the OS

Hmmmm,

I am not in this to start a flame war over computer os's. I just happen to be a Mac user (for a couple of reasons) and am having a problem.

...Just looking for a little help is all.

Oh, and my karate style IS better than yours!

Try saving the videos to your hard drive and playing them that way. There may be a streaming conflict with Mac's.
I just think windows is an inferior product and fails all the time. I do my stuff in Quicktime, and I've never had it fail or people tell me it doesn't work.

And back in the day VHS was inferior to my Beta and look what happened.

Also, .WMV files are smaller for the clarity. I can make them all - WMV, MPG, RM, QT/MOV, AVI, etc... but there are close to 70 videos on the site in 3 different bandwidths. That is a lot of server space.

If it still doesn't work saving it to your HD first, I'll see what I can do about adding another format

Good idea, Scott,

But
if the clip is set by the site to stream, how do you make it download? that is, I hit the link to the video page and when it opens, it is streaming or gives code.

Sometimes I want to keep a streaming clip but explorer doesn't seem to offer me that option.

I sthis a 'right mouse' or 'left mouse' thing - I'll buy a new mouse if I have to!

I don't know about Macs, but these files stream from a unix type server not windows so they are downloadable. Not sure how a Mac works but if the same as a PC, right click the link and "save as" for the file. If you get a .wmv extension (the 350k files) on the file you have the right attachment.

All the videos are now downloadable. Just do us a favor and don't burn them to a CD and sell them as someone tried to do. (They are free for everybody)

I will look for a way to download the vids. As far as right-clicking is concerned, Macintosh computers come with a one-button mouse. Although my trackball has three buttons .... so I guess I'll start pushing 'em. I love pushing buttons ...
Sorry, got carried away there. Thanks for the help so far.

Doh!

Found it - a Mac mouse uses a 'hold down' to get a menu, one of which says 'download image to disk.'

Sometimes this is not there and says, Download url...

If you hit download image to disk , you should get your download manager in Explorer.

Thanks...

I gave it a try. No problem downloading the file, but it showed up on my HD as a simple text file containing code. For the hell of it I oped it up in WMP 7.1. What happed then was interesting. I got the correct lable at the bottom of the window (something about George Mattson performing Konchin) but the "screen" was blank! So, I'll have to play around some more.

Also, Scott, I noticed the link to the Mac WMP, thanks for that (even though I had just downloaded it the other day). Talk about a loud 4 percent, huh!
