Much like in Uechi-ryu, in software-land there has always different groups, some with strong 'religious' attitudes. For a long time, UNIX people called NT Nice Try. However, now that Bill Gates has thoroughly taken over the world, NT developers are in the process of renaming the 'other' operating system EUNUCHS.
No matter where you go in life, Anthony, it is always the same s--t, just a different day.

I read with a grin on my face your posts. I have seen a couple EUNUCHS mouses and it's fuuny to watch a MIS person stop working cause they can't point and click any more...
I guess I'm lucky? as I haven't ran into any "die-hard" unix people. Being certified in NT4 technologies has made me want to start playing in the unix word. The power of a command prompt is scary,the power of a mouse is questionable(read 2nd. line above).

however, go to http://www.dilbert.com/ to get a dose of Linux, the subject of this week's featured comic strip on dilbert.com.
I'll bet you even like vi too! I remember it used to get me vi-olent, just like the guy in the mpeg. heh, heh, aha, ha!
BTW, They showed that mpeg on CNN TV last week when they were describing cube-rage.

Learn how to use it. It still blows the doors off anything else after all these years; I wish they'd make software as robust as that today. Forget the windows version if you are a command-line jubkie.

Boy, Tony! You're safe at home with Linux. I was just reading today, that with the impending breakup of Microsoft, Linux is going to be on the fron lines for the next PC operating system.
Man. If you want to do vi, throw away that wimpy wet noodle windows version and get right down there on the command line with the REAL vi.
What's so good about vi? It is the most powerful programming editing tool known to man. It is almost as hard to learn as APL, but once there you are in heaven.<font color=red>

Tony UNIX and its many mnay flavors will be hot in a couple years.I'm going to try Redhat as it comes as a install option on Dell and some big IBM's. I'd learn as much pico and vi as you can. You can get a job with Teksystems here in town, they are always looking for unix wise people. I can help you with the NT side and you can help me with the pico/vi side.

I remember UNIX before DOS, in the days of CP/M. One of it's claim's to fame was that it was a consistent operating system where everything was the same.
Along came the many flavors of UNIX, some with c compilers as loose as a goose, even different factions of the operating systems wouldn't and couldn't talk to each other (sounds familiar?). Then along came NT which was consistent amongst all PCs.
Porting c and c++ code from UNIX to NT became the word of the day in many circles. This has lasted a few years. Now, it looks as if the tide may be turning agan in a few years and we will go back to the future. There is just no end to it, and it is beautiful.
But no matter how good or how bad an operating system is, it is only as good as the developers who write the code.
As far as I am concerned, most so-called 'developers' or 'programmers' can't write code good enough to type themselves out of a wet paper bag. When Microsoft will be forced by the courts to release their code to developers, we may then witness the quality of it, either good or bad. You may even find some K&R or, quainter yet, Pascal still under the hood.
So, coming down the pike is Linux who has been sitting on the wayside for a few years waiting for an opportunity, and this may be it. One more wave. One more way to get you to shell out your $$$.
