Stupid tray will no longer stay closed on my old unit.Dell did a diagnostic test with me on line and suggested a new one.

Plextor makes some damn good drives.

Whenever I'm considering new software or hardware I check out PC Magazine-> http://www.pcmag.com or CNET-> http://www.cnet.com. You ought to find some good reviews there.

Damn!

Turned out I bought the wrong drive.

The guy from Comp USA comes up and installs my new microsoft cordless optical mouse, a USB hub [for when you come up next, Tony] but he tells me it is not the cd-rom drive that failed, but the DVD rom drive.

So I went out and bought a new Sony DVD rom-CD-rom combo, to be installed tomorrow.

But for the last couple of days had trouble with the PC not wanting to shut off or start.

It seems to get frozen and even the power button gets frozen.

Had to disconnect all power and try again, and finally it started. Any ideas?

Van,

That hub is gonna come in handy.. you'll see.

Your CD Burner was in good shape, it was your DVD rom that was screwing up. They sent you a new burner????

What diagnostic test did you do?

Check out this patch to fix some win98 shutdown problems:

Tony,

It was my fault. I went out and bought the wrong drive. Did get a new DVD – CD-ROM combo, by Sony, and it was installed today.

Here are the problems right now [several times a day]:

1] PC hangs up when starting, doesn’t get to windows, it just jams.

2] When this happens, mouse becomes inoperative and the power button must be held in for five seconds before the PC shuts down.

3] I did download the shutdown fix patch and saved it to disk as file 4756US8.exe

Question: How do I install it?

How do I fix the starting problems?

Van,

Restart your computer and hit F8 as if you where going to go into "Safe Mode". Instead, select the "logged" option. This will create a file called "bootlog.txt" in your root directory.. e.g. c:\bootlog.txt.

When windows loads, do a restart again so that the shutdown will also be recorded in bootlog.txt.

Email me bootlog.txt so I can see what the deal is.
