This is sort of a continuation of a discussion on other threads here and on Bill's forum. We were talking about eating locally and working with local farms to receive seasonal deliveries that can be eaten, canned, etc.

I'm putting some details and contact information, below, for those in Virginia, but I would hope other states, provinces, etc. would have something similar.

I just found out that the Virginia Department of Agricultue and Consumer Services has provided an online or free printed guide to a Virginia Grown Guide to Pick-your-own or Select-your-own products. It's meant to help you find nearby sources for Virginia fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, plants, honey, meats, poultry, eggs, fish, seafood, and fiber products. It contains 170 locations across Virginia that sell directly to consumers (farms, farmers markets, orchards, produce stands, nurseries, and pick your own operations), listed by county or city. The listings include product details, travel directions, hours, and contact information, etc. It also contains an availibility chart for planning purposes.

I strongly believe in supporting local farmers, especially family farms. But when it means we get healthier, more nutritious food (less travel/storage time)....what-a-bargain!
