You can also read a brief history/background of Women in Martial Arts (timeline) on the http://womenskaratetour.org/History8.htm. What's notable about this is how women in the US fought (literally) for their place in the MA world.
1960 – Steve Armstrong, a former Marine, introduces Isshin-ryu to Tacoma , Washington . He accepts women into his classes after a woman walked into his class and asked him why her sweat and money should be different from a man’s.

The Pacific Association of Women Martial Artists (PAWMA)
http://www.pawma.org

They hold an annual training camp for women martial artists. All of the teachers are women as well. Classes are offered in a variety of arts, including soft styles, hard styles, and weapons, rounded out by classes such as Taiko drumming, traditional Maori weapons, and verbal self-defense. Skill levels range from complete beginners who are there to choose a style to study to those who have been training for thirty or more years.

This year's camp will be held in California at Sonoma State University from August 5-8.
