Naginata was the womans weapon of feudal Japan to defend the home.
I think they had a few backup weapons, knives etc...

I recently saw a special on tv about naginata training. The speed and spryness of some of the older women was inspiring, particularly when going without pads/armour..impressive control/accuracy!

I believe there were also Naginata versus sword kumite which they trained.
Although I've never seen one, I have seen reference to them.
