Shikodachi/Kibadahi/Who's yer dachi?

So when I was at the Nago dojo, Uechi Kansei's son (whose name escapes me at the moment) was showing us some basics. So make the uechi elbow strike stance he stood with his feet together at a 90 degree angle (like when you bow) and then stepped forward three times the length of his foot.

His stance wasn't very low at all. And, in fact, he said that his understanding was that you shouldn't go lower in the stance than you can easily come up from (except for young men who should train longer stances for strength).

This more upright stance is very strong and table as a base.

Sensei Kanei's feet were parallel to the chair, ie he sat on the chair with his legs straddling each side. As he twisted his torso to the front his hips also flexed as did the back knee - very slightly. This ( I believe) generates a great deal of torque which is released thru to the elbow strike.

In Nago we call it Sue Goshii Dachi, but some dojo here in Okinawa call it Shiko Dachi. It is the same thing. Just a different way of saying it.
