"Liberals need to come to terms with their dysfunctional approach to human rights and the rule of law. If "human rights" is to have real meaning, it must be more than a weapon wielded by left-wingers against politicians they dislike."

Probably a little bit strong, and a bit broad, something along the lines of "whites need to come to grips with their racism." "Some" really ought to be inserted, because the liberals of the world come in more than one flavor. And I've never read an ends justifies the means attitude or tolerance of human rights abuses from any front in liberal magazines like The Nation. In a parallel from the other side of things, we have dabbled in supporting abusive governments because they stood against leftist aims or another government we opposed. So I don't see why the left per se needs to be singled out. One might then wonder if the reason Mugabe is not facing greater opposition has to do with a general disinterest in African affairs. We've sure moved faster when gas was on the line than when a contemporary genocide was under way in Rwanda.

Sounds like South Africa to me. One paragraph sticks out, Panther, <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote
Under Ian Smith, blacks had jobs and were protected by "the rights of Englishmen," but blacks were considered to be oppressed. Under Mugabe, blacks have no jobs and no rights, but they are considered to be liberated and free.

Perhaps it is a bit strong, Ian... I didn't write it, I just put the pointer here to see what discussions came about. And as Allen-sempai points out, there are some obvious parallels to South Africa.
