The deed was done at 12:30. By 1:30 Bill was still redfaced but leading a bo kata class.

Pics and videos were made from many angles and Bill will post them later.

The 20 or so who attended learned valuable self defense lessons. Even though initially blinded, Bill was able to execute many good MA techniques on a heavy bag.

The top 2 takeaways from the demo:

Uechi works even when under extreeeeeme stress.

Do not rely 100% on self defense sprays.

Thanks, folks!

It's 4 hours later.

* I taught the bo class (a nice distraction).

* I went out and got some snacks (another good distraction).

* I had to go to Southern States to get some more grass seed, as that last hurricane that came through washed away some of my fall lawn work.

* I went to The Battery Store and got a new battery for my auto remote entry device. By then, I was able to read the writing on the battery inside the device (CR2025), even without my reading glasses. Felt good.

I'll be out doing the patch-up on my yard before it gets dark and the rain storm comes through and wets the new seed and mulch. When I'm done, I'll upload some of the still pics, and write it up. Meanwhile, Jim Schaeffer and his daughter got some nice video with his professional Canon digital camera. He's going to edit and make a DVD, and we'll send it to Scotty for processing and uploading. Meanwhile, my camera (Nikon D70) caught some nice pics, thanks to Tristan Cooper - one of my black belts and a first year med student at MCV. It'll be interesting writing it up and discussing what I went through.

FYI, my eyes still sting a bit, and my left ear reminds me of the numb feeling I had after that sadistic nun hit me upside the face with a belt in parochial school. Yes, we (ex) Catholics know a thing or two about pain.

As they say, film at 11.

GEM: I would not have done this to anyone that was not superbly conditioned and understood what was going to happen. Being fair skinned Bill lit up pretty quickly. However, a good washdown using baby type soaps soon after the contact helped shorten the duration of the extreme pain.

It is scary knowing that once you get sprayed, the worst is yet to come as the pain builds. I would not volunteer to be sprayed again. Once is enough.

Ben: I still have quite a bit left as the can we used is the industrial size and strength version. So, come on out and you can be the demo at the next self defense class. As I recall, you are pretty fair skinned so you will really enjoy this.

Darn Bill I know it hurt but that doesn't give you the right to beat on old fat women.

Just joking,

my hats off to you, look forward to the film. Interesting that life pretty much just went on, I guess if one depends on only capsicum to get the job done they may be in for an ugly surprise.

We are lucky to have folks exploring these issues, I'd hate to come up empty on the street.

Thanks.. but no thanks. See this plant? I ate of it's fruit ONCE

It hurt like Hell for 1/2 an Hour. If the OC spray is anything like that at all I'd picture it as pure hell.

Besides, I can live vicariously through Bill's pictures.

Don't you dare throw those chilis away! It may be hell on the eyes, but that stuff makes a great 3-hankie Vietnamese noodle soup!

Bring some by next time you visit. Like vine-ripened tomatoes, there's nothing like fresh chili peppers.

I've been drying out some peppers and making some red pepper to put on pizza and spagetti.

I'd be more than happy to either dry some out for you or freeze some fresh ones for you. I'm not sure when I'll be in Richmond again. This month is pretty booked. I do look forward to coming out that way again. I benefited greatly from previous visits, and appreciate the time spent. Thanks for the welcome.

Once the wife returns to work Ben's Grandmother will be taking him thurs and fridays. I should be able to come up on a thursday evening.. or still a saturday maybee.

Just don't come near me with that spray

Hey Bill_ Congrats on a job well done.

One quick question though:

In such a situation, assuming the person sprayed has a very bad reaction, and suffers a heart attack or else [it happens under sudden stress] who would be liable?

And do you think the "sprayor" could claim assumption of risk on the part of the "sprayee"?

I signed a waiver, Van. Rich is no fool. And, I volunteered. The goal was to educate many so few would have to experience.

Of course as they say, possession of a lawyer is nine tenths of then law.

The grieving widow will do what the grieving widow will do. That doesn't mean she'll get anything out of it.

As for the "reasonable man" test, I am a trained athlete who deals in pain every day in class. I am also fully aware of what I am getting into here. And this is a substance approved for use by law enforcement personnel because it is a humane deterrent when lethal force is on the horizon.

This exposure is not a requirement in our dojo. However IMO it should be a requirement if a LEO or soldier is to use this against a prisoner. IMO, knowledge is power here and will save lives.

Tell that to Edwards though. But don't get me started.
