Dana, this may seem a silly question, but referring to the kick shown on page 442 of the Red Book; how do you know that Mr Uechi's right leg, doing the kick, is not the REAR leg which would explain the tucked-back shin?
Is there some way you can tell from the photo?

On another thread we discussed this as a front "snapping" kick in which the front-leg shin was tucked back prior to the front kick; this photo sequence was used as an example.

Just wondering.

I can't. I didn't even think of that. But if you watch the video of him performing the kata that was put up on the other thread you can see the same kick.

The hip movement is the same.
Did you show compassion today?

Neil:

Dana is correct the video of Uechi Sensei you see this same body mechanics and the same position in his kicks off the forward leg. This makes sense as the big Uechi Kata only have kicks off the front leg.
