Sorry, what I meant was my computer-genius friend said he could video me and upload it. So I'll be sweating, he'll be videoing.
He says he can film it on Hi-8 digital, rip it to DVD then upload it.
He asked me what size file would it be? I didn't know. What size files are your uploads?
Also, I noticed that some of the videos are "ram-drive" files; what player plays those?
My computer is unable to play them.

Hi there,

I've been a long time lurker on these forums for ages now, but I thought it I'd just de-cloak to say hello. The insights offered by the various teachers have been of great benefit to me, and for that I'd like to say thanks. I've found this thread to be especially fascinating. I've never trained in Uechi-Ryu, but I like what I see.

My background is in Goju-Ryu and Kyokushin, although for the last few years I've been studying the karate and Kobudo of Patrick McCarthy.

While I can't offer up any Uechi-Ryu kata, I can show some other kata, if anyone's interested. The performances aren't great as I was doing them more as study notes for myself, so they're a bit slack. But anyway...

The first kata is Shisochin.

The next clip is a section from Nepai.

I've also put up a section from the Yamane-Ryu Bo kata, Oshiro No Kon.

Nepai and Oshiro No Kon are quite long kata's, so I don't have room on my web-space for the whole thing, but they show the general idea.

Cheers,
Wayne Young

Hi Stryke,

Thanks very much for the welcome.

Actually I've just checked the Shishoshin I uploaded, and I noticed that the very end of the kata has been lopped off (ran out of web-space). The missing bits is simply the return to Yame and closing bow.

Cheers,

Hi Wayne welcome to the forums, another Kiwi! 8) The other one's got some skills too. I enjoyed your kata, first time I've seen shishoshin. Sure has an okinawan feel to it,I liked it. Good powerful performance.

Neil:

Looking forward to seeing your Katas. :multi:

Size? Marcus seems to be able to do a Kata clip of 1 MB that is very viewable.

I can’t seem to do this. The average seems to be about 4+ MB. I often end up with 5 -7 MB. :?

Not sure what he uses.

Wayne:

That you for stopping lurking and posting – and you picked a big way posting your Kata. :D

I very much liked your Kata. :D

I found your flow excellent and your knees and elbow harmony is most excellent! 8)

You have a very nice loose delivery of your strikes and I would expect your transfer of force to be very effective.

Thank you for posting and I hope you will continue!!! :D

Thanks guys. It's much easier coming out of hiding knowing there's another Kiwi around. Don't want to be the butt of all the Sheep jokes on my own now, do I?

In some ways, I feel like I'm cheating a bit, as it seems like I kind of know many of you already through reading these forums. While there's plenty of great information being presented by very knowledgeable people here, what I like most about these forums is the attitude of the participants. Things remain civil even when talking about politics :)

I've always wanted to try Uechi-Ryu, but I've just never had the opportunity. Hopefully I'll be able to address that at some point in the future.

In reading these forums, it seems there's a lot of overlap in what I do (or should I say, try to do) as well - compression/expansion, coiling/uncoiling, whipping and maximising torque through the total summation of joint forces. I guess its true what they say about the human body dictating what can and can't be done.

Laird:

Shisochin is a kata practiced by the Goju-Ryu people. It's not as popular as other Goju kata such as Sepai or Suparimpei, but I quite like it for some reason. Must be because is not too complicated (from an applications point of view) and fairly direct.

I too enjoyed the kata , very nice and fluid , something I`m very much trying to train into my karate .

Yamane-Ryu Bo kata, Oshiro No Kon . Is that one of the bo forms trained in Koryu Uchinadi ? , i remember learning one of the forms but unfortunately didnt keep it up as I couldnt retain it ....

Yes, Oshiro No Kon is one of the Bo kata practiced by Patrick McCarthy's group. Although I'm a student of Koryu Uchinadi, I'm actually not really sure if the kobudo we do is part of the KU curriculum or if it's separate. PM awards separate grades for empty hand and weapons.

One thing that struck me about the Uechi Seisan is how different it is to the versions that I've seen. Many of the other versions are basically the same, although the Goju version is also a little different. When I look at the Uechi Seisan compared to say Hangetsu, or the Wado version, it looks far more "combative". I like that!

It`s no secret Ive dropped Hangetsu from my list of kata I train , I intend to replace it with Uechi Seisan , I agree it feels more combatative .

It also feels older and more chinese ... But thats obvious

maybe it just feels less tampered with
