Uechi vs. Other styles

Post by dmaestas »

I have practiced many different martial art styles over the years. I started in American Kempo moved to Kung Fu, started Uechi Ryu, dabbled in Shotokan, almost earned a black belt in Tang Soo Do, and finally returned Uechi Ryu.

It wasn't till I earned the rank of Shodan that I really began the see benefits and advantages of Uechi Ryu. Uechi Ryu is adaptable to many different styles like Latin is to many different languages.

I have had the opportunity to apply Uechi principles to all the styles I have participated in. Besides the obvious mechanical differences like blocks, punches, kicks, and katas, Uechi Ryu takes advantage of body mechanics and physics. We use muscle alignment to create fulcrums and upright stances for mobility.

The most important part and the greatest difference is the breathing. Even thought many styles try to demonstrate the importance and benefit of proper breathing, none is more effective at the practice of and demonstration of than Uechi Ryu.

As a young man I sought out the "perfect" martial art. I hoped to find the most powerful and most effective style. What I found is, that style doesn't exist. I have also learned it is better to study something than nothing. Since I have had so many opportunities to study many things, I am greatful that I have had the opportunity to study Uechi Ryu.
