Uechi Robes

Post by John Cowan »

Who can fill-me in on the black ceremonial robes worn by Uechi Kanbun Sensi as shown in photos in Allan Dollar's book and the robe worn by Uechi Kanei Sensi as shown in the GEM Uechi Ryu Karate? The later is a great photograph showing Master Uechi Sensi with white tassel decorations on the robe and the Okinawan 3 comma symbols. Is the Uechi family entitle to wear the robes because of their status in karate or because of their samurai origins? In Patrick McCarthy's book on the Bubishi McCarthy is shown wearing similar garments. Who can wear these robes? Are pants or a hakama worn under the robes?

I would have thought that someone would have answered by now.

When I get a chance, I will ask Nestor Folta about this. He knows a lot about Okinawan culture, and his wife is Okinawan. He also studied in Okinawa with the Uechi family. I'll let you know what he says.

This is just the traditional hakama normally worn for special occasions. Anyone can wear it at anytime, but they would look silly, in Okinawa anyhow, just walking around in it.

They are normally worn at coming of age ceremonies that occur at certain points during an individuals life. 16, 20, 73, 83, 88, 93, 100.

It is customary (spell?) to have your photo taken when u dress for these ceremonies. The family uses the last one taken for required purposes after death.

The is the simple explanation hopefully it helps.
