For me kata has been an opportunity to perfect technique that can later be practiced in drills. It's also a great way to expose a person to a variety of techniques that they can concentrate on learning as they progress in their martial arts careers. Most of my instructors pay a lot more attention to what's going on during kata than what might be going on in a drill, especially in a large class. It might just be the students desire to achieve perfection in a kata that ultimately allows them to perfect a technique they normally wouldn't have tried to work on.
