I sure hope some records were broken. To me that would mean people are working hard to improve and showing good uechi spirit. That is one reason this was set up right? As Ueich practitioners it would be great to be known as that group in the martial arts world that are in great shape and always strong, ready to go. It would be great to be the navy seals of the martial arts world.

Which is a good thing too, otherwise I'd have to kick your butt the next time I see you :P

I was sad to see that Penner's was gone though :(

After that I went to Joe Pomfret's session. I knew Pomfret was a great fighter, but I didn't know he was such a great teacher.
Dang it Mike, I was in those two sessions too. How could I have missed you?! :(

it was my first camp in five years, and it was small but feisty. there was a high level of energy and intensity coming from everybody, and it showed in the seminars.

i'll try and get low-rez copies of the photos i took to george this week.

Coming Back

Post by Robb in Sacramento »

Wow. I had a great time. This camp was fun, informative, and a good place to be. From George and Susan’s welcome, to the my last seminar, with Art Rabesa (whose book on Explosive Karate I will now have to reread) it was just a wonderful experience. Al Wharton’s Seichin bunkai alone was worth the price of admission, but I also got a chance to see feel and experience Evan Pantazi’s Kyusho. His use of restorative technique had the entire seminar wanting more and lining up to experience his skill. Walter Mattson provided insight into Uechi that only be gained by years of dedicated practice.

Meeting and training with Mark Brelsford was an honor. I hope to recover from his demonstration of Nakahodo inspired technique in time for next year. Vicki, Sue, Jim and Harry did a phenomenal job of putting together and running the Fire Dragon challenge. The energy created by the competition among Fidele, John Felipe and others could was incredible. They each seemed to inspire the best from one another.

It was also great to feed off the energy of the other participants. For my roommate Russell, this was his first camp, and he was putting every ounce of energy into experiencing all he could. And there were the seniors, like Vinny Christiano, who gave of their time and their talent to anyone who sought advice, feedback or encouragement. I was also delighted to be there for the master ceremony, and to watch John, Henry, Roy and Shelly demonstrate the richness of Uechi.

But most of all, I need to express my gratitude to George, and state what a treat it was to have him leading classes in addition to the San Chin by the Sea (and yes, I made it all three mornings). For those of us who are all too keenly aware of the politics and pettiness that sometimes seems to pervade our art and style, it was just a breath of new life to have George sharing with us his years of study and insight. His emphasis on keeping comfortable in San Chin, and working the body naturally was energizing. I am making a promise to myself to be at the camp again next year (the second weekend in August I believe) and hope to bring some of my friends form Sacramento with me. I hope others are feeling the same way.

Peace

Dear George and Susan,
I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for inviting me to your camp last weekend. It was great massage experience. I now know I really enjoy sports massage. I couldn't have asked for a better setting to work all day (I miss that constant ocean breeze and the smell of the salt in the air). I had a blast meeting all the friendly folks. I hope I helped work out a few kinks and pains on all those who came by my table. If you are in touch with them, please pass on my thanks to Keith and Mark (don't know his last name but he has a shaved head) for squeezing my shoulders in between sessions when I was tired. And thanks to Patrick for sticking a needle in my hand to make my neck feel better. I look forward to next year.
Shalom,

My Summer at Camp

Post by mspatty2 »

As a first time attendee at this year's summer camp I cannot help but be enamored at the wealth of knowledge that was shared in those few days. The camp without a doubt added to my overall breath of Uechi-Ryu practice and knowledge.

The seminars were fantastic and as you read these posts you know that the teachers were brilliant and inspiring. But the teaching went beyond the seminars and into the fiber of every discussion and every meeting with a fellow practitioner. Each person I met enhanced my love for karate and my enjoyment at camp.

My humble gratitude for the amazing people who gave their time and knowledge. My thanks to George and Susan for their dedication to making these camps a yearly event.

(Regretfully, I was unable to meet the infamous Bill Glasheen! :P )

I am so looking forward to next year when we will be celebrating George E. Mattson 50th year of teaching Uechi-ryu in America!! I will be putting my reservation in early.

Our gang in sunny VA is raring to sign up as early as possible. Once those dates are decided on, we are ready to run.

If it is going to be the second weekend is August, it will fall on August 8. 9. and 10. Since we don't know yet, I told our students to hold out the weekend before to be on the safe side.

Great meeting you Patty, Tim, and the kids. Hope your trip back was a good one.

BTW, when is the Winter Camp going to be. I might try to come down your way and make that one as well. Please keep me posted.

Always,
Vicki

Hey there Miss Vicki,

What a pleasure it was meeting you. You and your gang did a great job on that Fire Dragon test. Remember it will be me and you next year! I am starting to train now. (Perhaps we need to add an ambulance just in case.?)

Will keep you posted on Winterfest. We would love for you to come visit us anytime.

Blessings,

Patty
