Five quotes from Muhammad Ali

Post by Bill Glasheen »

This morning in class I was working with a teenage girl (from India) who was pivoting on her heel. Aaarrgghh!!! Just a week before, I had her point out an advanced black belt doing a "heel toe" in her Kanchin stepping.

Once again, I believe in footwork!

So I turn to the girl and say "Float like a butterfy..." Nothing. Nada. I turned to two older gentlemen in class and said "Man, I feel old!"

Her dad was there, but I thought it possible he wouldn't know since he was born and raised in India. (He is one of many of Asian descent brought into Richmond's West End to work for Capital One.) So I told her to go home and Google "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee."

Just to check out how easy I knew it would be to indentify the author, I did it. Yep... Popped right up.

And then I came upon these 5 quotes from Muhammad Ali. Enjoy!

- Bill

P.S. When I read the 2nd one, I think of George. Often he doesn't know how to articulate a thought concerning martial arts, and yet on the concept he's often spot on. Go figure... ;)

Hahaha psychological warfare
  • "The fight is won or lost far away from the witnesses, behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road; long before I dance under those lights."
A true statement, though it makes me think, just how much value is a game plan if this is the case? I know i can strategize just before i compete, ive done it before, nothing complex like these Boxers/MMA guys do.
  • "Inside of a ring or out, ain't nothing wrong with going down. It's staying down that's wrong."
Pretty self explanatory.
  • "He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life."
JUst hope the risk is calculated.....

Ah footwork.

It's either really difficult to explain, or can easily be simplified.

For instance, Rick really divides foot work up in two ways, and everything else is a variation.

While another guy i train with says there are six main ways to use footwork in stand up, and explained it.(hard to describe them all in words)

Anyway, one thing is clear to me:

70% Of good stand up is footwork.

Maybe 90%

  • I can't remember who said it, but it is worth a few hours or years of meditation:
"Plans are almost always worthless, but _planning_ is vital."

    Think about it.

I need coffee.

Ive e-mailed george foreman before.

Asked him about his power whether it was learned or developed.

He replied saying he started off with mediocre power, but worked on it.

Georgey is awesome too.

Love both boxers.
