Stress, Antidepressants, The Economy, And Your Health
August 30th, 2008 · No Comments · Health, Motivation
I listened to a very interesting news story today about the economy. The link between depression, employment (or lack thereof), and health is unfortunately, beginning to show itself. I get the impression that people don’t like to talk about it, but our health and economic well-being are entwined more closely than many of us may like to consider.
The news story consisted of an interview with a pair of psychologists, and the question of interest was - Are they seeing a change in their business as a result of the perceived economic slowdown? They answered in the affirmative, and went on to say that more people are asking for anti-depressants and fewer engaging in psychotherapy. Anti-depressants are cheaper.
As evidence of their observation, it has recently been reported that sales of Cymbalta have risen 26%, Effexor sales are up 8%, and Lexapro is up 6%. This is the rub. Surveys of families confirm that during economic slowdowns, traditional approaches to dealing with stress are among the first things to get eliminated from the family budget. That means: gym memberships, workouts, family vacations, healthy eating, etc. This bit of evidence would seem to suggest that families may be end up trading dollars. Depression, employment, and health are inextricably linked.
I’m not saying we should all go out and pay for a $100/month gym membership. I don’t. But during tough economic times, it may be even more important to find ways to exercise and eat right. These are proven to be some of the best mechanisms the human body has for dealing with stress.

Ugh. We were already jacked up on anti-depressants as a nation before the recession began. With everyone claiming a crisis of epic proportions (except McCain, who said the fundamentals were strong... and Obama, who's waited 5 months to agree (enough time to create a crisis he couldn't let go to waste), it's only getting a little worse.
Soldiers jacked up on them from being in a warzone too long; kids jacked up on them because they're not mature or trained enough to sit like robots in classrooms with less and less PE (much less all the other issues thrust upon them these days); parents jacked up on them, struggling with role expectations and reversals; doctors faced with patients that won't take no for an answer and don't want to hear what they need to do...
We're a mess.

Lots of good points made here.
With all that is going on in my own life (don't get me started...) and all that I have to fear, I am both stressed and lacking time.
Damn it to hell, I've had to cut back on my weight workouts. Talk about something that would help stress... But I still do the karate. I still get something. And I try to sneak in some weights after the workout.
It is my drug of choice.
I will say however that some kids really do need to be on Ritalin, and some adults do need to be on antidepressants. Yes, the exercise is really, really important. But for some, they could use a little Rx help.
Less is more. Start with the exercise. It's better for you in the long run - the WHOLE you. But don't forgo needed therapy.
Oh and by the way... We Uechika do have an advantage over other artists. There's nothing like a good session of contact work to tank up on the endorphins.
