Five Hurdles

Post by MikeK »

Over on his blog Rory recommended this article and I figured I'd pass it over to here.

EXCELLENT POST MIKE!

Thank you for this very good article! I actualy used to fight in the SCA, mostly heavy fighting and some rapier. This looks like a great website in general for female fighters, and the article has some pretty interesting hits.

The article is well worth the read, but the hurdles are, in VERY brief:
1-Getting out on the field(in effect, competing in a male dominated sport)
2-I can be hit, in fun (a lot of emotional and conditional baggage here relating hitting to pain, shame, etc.)
3-I can hit without hurting (nurture issues, conditioning)
4-I can't do this (for men this is easy, but YOU willl have to work at this, etc)
5-go out and play (challenging self, going beyond the usual partners)

I do not do the article justice. I know that I read this and winced several times. Would love to hear the thoughts of others on this article..either as teachers or as students.

Rory recommended this book at camp a couple of years ago. I bought a copy and will make it a point to read it. Thanks for posting that topic, Mike.
