When you hear a scream, don't stay silent.
Those were the words of UVa president John Casteen at a large gathering of students. They were there to mourn the tragic death of 22-year old Yeardley Love by her ex boyfriend. Both were players on their respective lacrosse teams. Both teams were in contention for a national championship. And Love's killer was an honor student at a top-tier university (by US News and World Report ranking).

THE BRUTAL ACT
This is pieced together from an AP source.

According to the affidavit released in Charlottesville on Tuesday, Huguely waived his right to have an attorney present while he gave his chilling account of what happened at Love's apartment.
***
Huguely told police the two had been in a relationship "and that the relationship had ended,"
***
Huguely - listed in the lacrosse media guide as 6-foot-2 and 209 pounds
***
George Huguely, a senior on the men's team, told police he kicked in Love's bedroom door, shook her, and that her head repeatedly hit the wall. Love was found bloodied and dead by friends early Monday.
***
two people found Love, of Cockeysville, Md., face down in her bedroom with a pool of blood on her pillow, a large bruise on her face and one eye swollen shut. She was pronounced dead at the scene after attempts to revive her.
***
Huguely told police he communicated with Love by e-mail and left with her computer. He also told them where they could find it; Longo said investigators have retrieved it and are "in the process of trying to see what evidentiary value may exist."
***
The 22-year-old suspect, of Chevy Chase, Md., has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Love, also 22. Both were expected to graduate this month.

WAS THE PAST PREDICTIVE OF THE PRESENT?
From AP sources...
Here's another interesting tidbit. Huguely graduated from the same Maryland private high school as several individuals who were involved in the Duke lacrosse scandal. All members of the lacrosse team were found innocent of raping the exotic dancer who brought charges on them. But that doesn't account for the appearance of impropriety at their party.
During the Duke scandal, Huguely was interviewed by The Washington Post. In the interview he suggested that the Duke lacrosse players should be considered innocent until proven guilty.

Apparently this news never made it to officials at UVa who could have reacted to it by sanctioning him (e.g. kicked off the lacrosse team for behavior unbecoming of a University student).Police in Lexington, Va., about 70 miles from Charlottesville, said that in November 2008, Huguely was shocked with a stun gun by an officer there after resisting arrest for public intoxication. He pleaded guilty to two charges last year, was placed on six months of probation and given a 60-day sentence, which was suspended.
The arresting officer, R.L. Moss, said in a statement Tuesday that she felt it necessary to use the stun gun because Huguely became abusive and his size was no match for her.
She said in the statement that Huguely was "yelling obscenities and making threats."

Yeah, but why did he actually do what he did? I can easily believe he learned to be a mysogynist, and I can understand that something enraged him. However, even if I set aside any sense of morality and concern for another person's life, I cannot understand the abject disregard for the consequences to his own life from a guy who presumably has worked hard to get where he got. The way he treated that cop says to me that, regardless of his aptitude for other things, he's a born criminal, and the sooner we get him behind bars for the rest of his natural life, the better. His lawyer has said some ridiculous things, but then again, you can't make a silk purse out of sow's ear, and if I were him, I'd be trying to engineer a plea deal. I remarked to my wife yesterday that the lawyer's "accident" explanation reminded me of this guy.

Couple of things, Mike.
First...
Huguely lost all ability to get a plea deal when he chose to speak to the police without counsel present. Not to defend what he did to Ms. Love, but... dumb. dumb, dumb. He could have revealed just as much information to the police - AFTER making the plea deal. Instead he chose to open the kimono and tell all.
I'm thinking he has a bit of a death wish. After doing what he did (particularly after having done a 6 month suspended sentence), he probably was both remorseful and knew he was screwed.
Second...
These two knew each other since high school. They both attended private school in Maryland. Again not to defend his actions, but... I know how a woman can rip your heart apart at that age. Been there, done that. I'm not so sure about the mysogeny verdict; this was a crime of passion.
Third...
I'm going to guess at a few things here.

I'm going to guess at a few things here.
- Alcohol was involved. As it was, Love's roommates called 911 because they thought *SHE* was in trouble because of alcohol. We all know how alcohol attenuates inhibitions.
- Not revealed here is that Huguely himself was banged up. At least at some point, this was a fight between 2 people. Obviously the large man walked away from it.
- Huguely had some major anger management issues. The language he spewed towards the policewoman and others (suggesting he was going to kill somebody) speaks to that. Why his parents never got him help is beyond me. Or maybe they did, and he just didn't take it seriously.
- We're talking about the number 1 lacrosse team in the country right now, and one of the best lacrosse programs (including physical facilities) in the country. These guys are treated like royalty. For some, it's a problem. Like more than a few NFL and NBA players (LT anyone???), they let it go to their heads.
Meanwhile... where is the character development for off-the-field behavior? It certainly was absent with the Duke lacrosse program, which was why their coach deserved to get fired. This incident suggests that more could be done.
It's not my verdict, and I expect it goes too far, but the question does arise as to whether he would have treated a male cop the same way. I'm not ready to write it off as nothing more than a one-off crime of passion. The behavior with the cop speaks against it, and if the victim fought bank while she was being beaten to death, then good for her!Bill Glasheen wrote:I'm not so sure about the mysogeny verdict; this was a crime of passion.

Male cop, or a physically larger cop?mhosea wrote:

Trust me on this one, Mike. Once upon a time I literally was a starving student, barely able to feed myself while holding down a full engineering curriculum AND taking pre-med classes. I hung out with a handful of others who were just as ambitious (and as poor) as I was.
There was no shortage of resentment against a certain genre of football player. While we were quite literally starving in "The Glass Hat" and doing some studying in-between classes, we'd witness varsity football athletes coming in and eating their fill. Two trays worth. Then we'd run into a few of these same guys at parties (back when the drinking age was 18...) and have to put up with their boorish behavior.
A small minority of football athletes were highly resented by MALE students who were there to get a degree and pretty much paid their way. SOME football jocks acted like God's chosen race in the classroom, in the cafeterias, and where mating rituals happened.
Remember that someone had to call the police first, Mike. He was already out of control. Then a female officer arrives to deal with a 6-2, 210 pound jock. So was this about gender, or was this about size and entitlement attitude?
I'm not ready to pull the mysogeny trigger. Yet...
There is a certain breed of Rugby Road frat man that treats women like cattle at the frat parties. Date rape (usually as a result of alcohol) happens several orders of magnitude more than it's reported.
It isn't just the bad boys though. I had a few instances where I was targeted by aggressive women. Women can be just as naughty as the men. They just do it differently. And few men complain... until they get cooties later on.

WWBT (NBC 12) tonight confirmed my suspicion. Reporters are unearthing that it was common knowledge amongst his friends that Huguely had an alcohol problem. It turned him from Dr. Jekll to Mr. Hyde. The issue discussed was why it wasn't dealt with - particularly in light of his previous alcohol-related conviction.Bill Glasheen wrote:

That's really what I was thinking, anyway. Misogyny was too strong a word. I meant something more like "contempt" than hatred.Bill Glasheen wrote: I'm not ready to pull the mysogeny trigger. Yet...

More information which points to this being a crime of passion.

BALTIMORE, MD (WWBT) - More reports of violence involving a [UVa] lacrosse player accused of beating his ex-girlfriend to death.
The Washington Post reports 22-year-old George Huguely attacked a sleeping teammate in February of 2009 after hearing the teammate may have kissed Yeardley Love.
Love was found beaten to death on Monday morning.
Huguely is charged with first degree murder.
The [Washington Post] reports Huguely's coach knew about the incident and even disliked Huguely.
It's not clear if the men's lacrosse coach informed the university.
