Hi Bill,

I have to go through this a few times myself. I've never met Oyata Sensei (but I was there when George Dillman was trying to convice one of my friends to meet him, but Sutrisno Sensei was already working similar materiall in his family Shotokan study).

Frankly I'm surprised this has been shared.

The material is similar to many of the studies I've had with different instructors, and this clinic seems to be focusing more on basic underlying principles, but I think that's a good place to start anyways.

thanks,

I've started going through this.

I'm with you, Victor, in that it takes some time going over this material to pick up the ideas. Oyata is teaching in a kind of free-form manner, and he's about as eloquent as a 6-year-old. The students aren't much better.

"Sensei said you need to hit with technique." (Everyone nods knowingly, as if this was deep.)

Aarrgghh!!!

But if I squint my eyes, I can figure out what he's trying to get across. Most of the time...

It's still fun to watch though. The tough part is having a partner right there to play with. Then the principles need to be articulated. A lot of it is very obvious to me, and I have simpler/better explanations than what's being spoken. But there are a few gems hidden amongst the basics here.

Hi Bill,

I have to agree with your assessment. In my experience great/good instructors teach to the level of the students, and watching video's of those clinics often reveales little.

Oyata Sensei on the video is a challenging individual to undestand his english. Then again even with his basics he's not explaining the underlying principles and multiple force multipliers in play.

After he sets up an opponent suddently he strikes. I would characterize it as skilled blunt force impact being demonstrated. I haven't seen anything I believe I could not duplicate if I wanted to strike my opponent in the neck, though my students are not as willing to stand before me when I get that gleam in my eye, after several decades they suspect what is coming. I'm not sure my 'tool' would be exactly the same as his (his demo's are too fast for clear obsevation) but I believe they would have the same result.

They are hard to watch. Perhaps with snow this Saturday I'll force myself further.

Now let's see can you Uechi guy's do something exotic as kick someone in the leg and drop them.. hmmmmm
Or use thumb-ridge hand strikes to the neck...hmmm

Somehow I bet you can duplicate the same effects too <GRIN>

still working
