Yet, in what he writes, there is something to be learned when it comes to 'people packs'...
The smell alone would kill a horse a mile away
And the gratuitous rapes and violence are there/here to stay.
Look at the Katrina lessons.

Lessons of Katrina:
You have to be careful of the cops when no one is watching. Sure, most of them are good, honest, hard-working folks.. but just like Occupy has its bad eggs, so too will the badges.
When you're told to evacuate, do so... but don't necessarily go in the direction everyone else is going. Make your own evac plans in advance, set aside supplies, and be ready to go when you need to. Setting off on the second day of an evac will have you stuck in place as the mess overtakes you.
Trust but verify, and trust your gut. If something about somebody gives you the willies, put some miles between you.
A note on tear gas:
It *****, but people who have had repeated exposure to the stuff can continue on. Expose as little skin as possible, keep your hands off your face, and be prepared for copious amounts of snot and tears. You'll feel a burning sensation in your eyes and on your skin (eyes first, skin later). Breath slowly, and try not to cough (it only irritates your throat even more to cough). Clean air is the only cure. Wind is best. Spread your arms and put your face in the wind, and keep blinking! Keeping your eyes shut only makes it last longer.
