I rewrote this I think ya might get it now............
Bruce Lee said, “Sparring, lives in the moment. The highest technique is to have no technique.”

Once the fighter steps on the mat, he no longer represents a style. He’s free to adapt and survive—which is exactly what Joe Lewis strived to do. Strip away frivolous motion and technique, be of 'no mind'.......and 'keep it simple stupid.'

'When fight time comes a master fighter must take away an opponents advantage.'

A master fighter knows to eliminate an opponents advantage. Rule number one is an aggressive defense. This allows you to break an opponents game plan down, causing self doubt within him. You must also know how to execute the:

Three attributes of an effective strategy:

1) Confuse 2) Deceive 3) Exploit your opponent aggressively !!

Practice developing head rhythm for defense of one’s head, and body rhythm for defense of ones body,

NOT the use of ones hands for defense.

This premise is the “opposite” of what the majority of martial arts styles advocates and teach.

If you have the time for blocking, trapping & cuffing, you have time to hit.

“What counts most ......................
is not the martial arts skills you’re able to perform or to teach someone,
but the confidence you leave within them enabling their effective use of those skills.”

“The problem today is that many instructors never field-test the material they teach. Most of what’s being taught was created on someone’s desktop or in someone’s mind but was never tested. "

Bruce Lee initially trained in Wing Chung Kung Fu, but later rejected well-defined martial art styles.
Lee always maintained a 'childlike' inquisitiveness, researching and experimenting with the use of techniques from various sources.

Bruce Lee said,

“Sparring, lives in the moment. The highest technique is to have no technique.”
Once the fighter steps on the mat, he no longer represents a style.
He’s free to adapt and survive which is exactly what Joe Lewis strived to do.

"Like Attracts Like"
While in the hospital having one of my multipule surgeries one of my kids gave me a stone with the word 'inspire' on it. Each night before bed and each day when I woke I would see the 'inspiration stone' on the nightstand and pick it up.

It reminded me to get up and do my laps around the hospital, no matter how much pain I was in.
Once I was home on 'bedrest', I used the stone to motivate me to the gym every day no matter what !

(tired , sick, sore) The object allows you to create a powerfull mind / body connection.
Think , Act, Speak......Your thoughts become your actions.

JOE LEWIS NEVER LOST HIS TITLE...
So What REALLY Happened...?
In 1975 Joe Lewis was invited to a press conference in Beverly Hills for his upcoming fight.

Don Quine the promoter came over with a smile and said with arrogance to Lewis,
"You are no longer the Heavyweight Champion. We just took your title away from you; we made some new 'bylaws' and agreed to remove you from our heavyweight title and there's nothing you can do about it."

That's how Joe Lewis lost his title---not in the ring!!!

The question is why did Don Quine do that?

The PKA had stripped Lewis months earlier without his knowledge. (Lot's of class shown for the one who started this sport in this country.) After that incident, the PKA had a run off to determine the new champion. However, there was plenty of other "Unethical" things that took place back then with the PKA and their leadership. The Quines originally made the fighters sign contracts in the locker room just as they were dressing to go out and fight on the night of the first and original World Championships in Los Angeles. Of course that's not how it was supposed to be done but the fighters had no choice but to sign a couple of hours before they left the locker-room to fight.

Back then they could do whatever they pleased since there was no athletic commission watching them. They created the titles, promoted the fights, managed the fighters, sanctioned the fights, and match made each bout without any physicals....all this as a single party... -try that illegal nonsense today.

Joe Lewis had a fight with a fighter named Ross Scott in Atlantic City. The fight was a 7 round non title bout with only one rule which was entered by Glenn Keeney... again in the locker rooms just before the fighters walked out to fight. He wanted the six kick per round rule which they gave him. In the bout, Lewis dislocated his right shoulder five times, but kept fighting. Onlookers say he was not in shape in those days but at that time, Ross was still not yet in Lewis' class. Lewis lost the fight because he was not getting in six kicks per round....and, it was a bit hard to fight with just one arm. 8) 8O 8) 8O

Muhammad Ali had six of his scouts watching ringside. After the bout they came into Lewis' dressing room and told him, "Mr. Lewis, you beat that boy, but we don't understand why they gave him the fight. We don't understand these kickboxing rules." They shook their heads and left and said they would call Lewis in a week to see if he could fight Kareem Allah in three weeks on Don King's Pay for View Show. When they called Lewis told them his shoulder was still injured and to use Jeff Smith, so they did. Don King didn't like Jeff's performance or lack of presence in the ring and dropped all the upcoming kickboxing events he had scheduled on his next two events with Ali.

What I do requires fantastic concentration...
but you can't be totally alone, or you lose all contact with reality,
so even when I'm engrossed and secluded I look to my mentors for inspiration .

Jim Maloney brought Uechi Ryu Karate to Canada and is known as one of "The Three Animals of Uechi Ryu."
He is a ruthless fighter and the kindest most generous person I have ever met .
I call Sensei Maloney 'Dad' and he refers to me as 'Son'. (nuff said)
What follows is a telephone conversation w/ Van Canna about an exchange between Jim Maloney and the legendary Bruce Lee........

"It ***** to Live in Fear"

Change is not easy.

Years ago at a Buzz Durkins' seminar for E.F.C. (Educational Funding Company),
I learned that Change is inevitable.

Change challenges us and pushes us beyond the edge of where we are comfortable.

"Joe Louis was knocked out in his first fight with Max Schmeling.
The tell-tale movements of Joe's left glove disclosed the fact that he was preparing to shoot a left jab.
Schmeling timed Joe's telegraphs and smashed him again and again with straight rights to the head.
Herr Maxie smashed him every time that careless left hand beckoned."

“Twenty years from now,
you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.
So throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails.
Explore. Dream. Discover.”
