I have and always will tote a can of bear spray with me on hikes. It lives in a holster attached to my belt, I read the directions 10 times to make sure I knew how to deploy it if necessary. I wouldn't mind having a handgun with me as well, but I still haven't made the move on purchasing one yet.

Van, Alaska doesn't allow 'automatic knives,' but other than that, carrying a knife outside of Anchorage seems to be solidly covered under this section, unless the knife is proven to be used in the commission of a crime:

(b) In a prosecution under (a)(1) of this section, it is an
affirmative defense that the defendant was... (1) in the
defendant's dwelling... (2) actually engaged in hunting,
fishing, trapping, or other lawful outdoor activity that
necessarily involves the carrying of a weapon for personal
protection.

Outside of Anchorage, I have seen guys walking around with belted sheath knives whose lengths went clear down to the knee, with a gun in a chest holster or carried on the opposite hip, in broad daylight, in smaller towns. Nobody bats an eye.

I've carried this one since '97, everywhere. Sent it in once to have a screw replaced (lifetime warranty repair) and the others tightened. Other than that, it's always been there for me:

Mine looks a little different (blade is darker, has a coating on it).
