responsibility and awareness.

Responsibility is a big factor in awareness, when you accept that bad things can happen to you,you are more likely to notice them before hand,too many people are in denial about what can happen to them,they read the paper but assume that would never happen to them.

by accepting that it can happen to you, you become responsible for paying attention,you can learn to focus your attention in the right way and on the right things.

By being responsible for your safety you are engaged in gathering information,and questioning/developing your judgement.

Thanks Van another thought, and one especially important under stress and trying to maintain proper situational awareness, with factors such as tunnel vision and auditory exclusion etc. Under the dump , this can be near impossible . However.....

while not my metaphor I know a good idea when I steal it , unfortunately I forget the source or I'd credit the author

But basically the statement goes.

attention is a like a spotlight, it highlights your focus , but it leaves everything else in darkness.

we need to be very aware where we are shining our spotlight , and what we are excluding by narrowing our focus.

we must keep a broad view and like positional footwork be aware of our blind-spots of attention as much as position.
