I still hear a lot of karate folks saying that kind of stuff and they seemed to even believe in it.

A lot of those old sayings might have been cool back in the days when fist fights were just fist fights.

Now that this is 2013, I don't know about Boston but in the San Francisco Bay Area, especially right across the Bay, guns and morons are aplenty and nowhere is safe. "Coming" to anyone with "empty hands" will most likely receive a few bullets, unless he is in a dojo.

Good points Henry. It always goes to 'whom and what' you are 'coming to' with your body in order to preserve it.

As you point out, it is all about a study and understanding of violence.
