Explain why this injury happened

Post by Bill Glasheen »

Warning... this is not for the faint of heart. It's not as gruesome as the Lawrence Taylor on Joe Theismann injury or the Kevin Ware NCAA tournament injury, but it's bad enough.

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is a rising star in their organization. He's had a super year, and the Orioles have given the best team in baseball (Boston) fits this year. Machado is a key cog in that Orioles offensive machine, as is the young home run hitter Chris Davis.

Manny unfortunately is done for the year.

Update on Manny Machado
The Baltimore Sun wrote: Manny Machado's injury less serious than feared; he could be ready for spring training

Machado could recover in six to eight weeks, doctors say

September 24, 2013|By Childs Walker | The Baltimore Sun

The Orioles' 2013 season plummeted from modestly disappointing to something far gloomier the instant Manny Machado took an off-kilter step Monday in Tampa Bay and wrenched his left knee.

But the news was not as bad as feared, as an MRI revealed Tuesday that Machado had not torn any major ligaments. The All-Star third baseman tore his medial patellofemoral ligament, which Orioles trainer Richie Bancells described as a smaller ligament that keeps the kneecap from sliding laterally.

That's the good news for Manny. It's not as bad as it could have been.

Now the question remains... How did something silly like this happen to a world-class athlete?

Watch this again. In particular, watch the runner and watch him looking at the ball.

Then go back to this thread I started and read.

..... Selective Attention

This was on the tail end of a season where Baltimore had a chance to make the playoffs. Every play counted. And the rookie was super-obsessed with his handiwork that just might help them win an important game.

The more you focus on the folks in white, the more likely you'll miss the gorilla hiding in plain sight. That's the reason work on mushin is so important if you want to survive a real-world fight against potentially more than one bad guy.

Holy Hell, he's lucky. Knew it wasn't his ankle, but I was sure it was a major ligament. Thanks for sharing, Bill.
