pgp problem

Post by maurice richard libby »

ok, so I downloaded PGP freeware, installed it, no problem. Well, except that it doesn't work with Netscape. No problem, I fire up IE4. I log on to the Uechi Ryu site. No problem. I go to van canna's page to read the secret messages. Big problem. IE crashes, taking with it all my virus software, everything on the taskbar, even the controls for Dial-up networking. I can't even hang up.

What gives?

Hello Maurice,Tony-San.
Just did a quick little research on what you said was happening. I'm a die-hard Netscape user but have to have IE 4 around for MCSE purposes. Anyway, i am unable to use netscape and the PGP software togethere as it was ment to be i.e. copy a message to the clip board and then decrypt/verify it. i just get a message saying no PGP information or something like that. Yet i can fire up IE 4 and do the same operation and it works 100%.
There are some system varibles we might be able to compare and maybe narrow it down.
I'm on a win `98 machine with 48megs i run Netscape as my default browser IE 4 don't even know its installed hardly.
i generaly run dunce, pgp tools,MS DUN,AVP,ICQ and Agent news reader all at once with my browser not much of a system strain.
A question i have is what Virus scanner are you using and what else is running?
i'm heading over to NAI to see if they have a hotfix or even know of this situation.
i'll report back and let you know

Don't know what it fixes but will let you know later. I need to study

Ok i "installed" the new "UPDATE" what a pain it wanted to UN-install the old version then install it self. So it is a new version totaly No big deal as it leaves your key rings alone and will re-import them.
So it fixed a few bugs and appears to be a worth well download and install.

Tony-San on you ftp site you will see a pic of the error i get when using it with netscape. Maurice is the error below the same you get?

Image

just a little note, my netscape isn't installed fully or correctly so that may be a prob.

Hope the PGP freeware 6.0.2 fixes your problem. It's uploaded in the ftp site so you can get it when your ready

Well, I downloaded pgp6.02 and I read anthony's encrypted message and it worked fine. I was using netscape at the time. So it seems to work now. I was a pain to have to wait while it uninstalled the older version (on my machine it was all of two days old), but it seems to work fine.

Anthony:

That error message is what I was getting whenever I tried to use pgp. I still get it when I try to decrypt Dakkon's message to you (or was it your message to Dakkon--whatever).

Now, what I'd really like to know is why IE crashes every time I try to get a forum on the Uechi-Web.

Thanks a lot dudes.

tony,

I never thought of a java problem, I'll try without the frameset and see what happens.

No, no '98, but i've been having problems with windows 95. You may recall my problem with the "wrong version" errors while trying to uninstall SR1 and re-install Microsoft Office. I may have to reinstall windows95 with all the old DLL files to try to get back to the original build.

I hate windows. If the software i need were available in linux or unix versions i'd do that. Yikes.

thanks for your help

Heheheh I'm 1/2 way to becoming a MCSE and hate Windows and Micro$oft too.
Uh there is some VERY VERY nice Linux apps out there and of course they are free ;-)
i downloaded a 60 meg office suite' thats suposed to be as nice as Office `97
only thing is i don't have a Linux machine to run any of this stuff on so it sets and takes up space till i can burn a cd and build my Linux machine.
X-Windows ahoy maties!!!
