Came across an article recommending NetSonic 1.02 from Web3000. The article says that the shareware (available from download.com) "prefetches links downstream of where you are, so pages pop up almost instantaneously." Given that my computer is a bit slow (painfully so according to you Tony-san!) I wondered if this might be a good utility for me to install. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Lori

Tony-San,
Such harsh words for Lori ;-)
But i do agree with Tony to a point.
Most web-Accelerators do help some what.
But with anything short of a 33.6 or higher they can slow you way down!!!
As you said it "prefetches links downstream"
That means it is filling your hard drive with more stuff. That in it self can slow your maching down. I don't know what type of machine you have or speed modem you have either but a good 56k modem is worth the $60-$100. Now a days anything under 56k is unacceptable!!

OK, I have a 56k modem, on both my desktop and laptop. However, the fastest speed I've ever been able to use is 31200! I used to blame the server people, but have been told modem speed has a lot to do with telephone line clarity and other factors not associated with the server, computer or modem. Any comment on this?

I have seen Tony-Sans woos when it comes to his connect speed. As he said the quality of the line and distance to the local switch are factors in what type of connect speed you get.
I'm a big fan of the "Connect Speed" don't matter your transfer speeds do!!
I can connect at 45,333 or 48,000 and get slower transfers on the 48,000.
What you can do to see what your TRUE speed is; On a Win 98 machine go to accessories menu. Then go to system tools and select the system monitor you can customize it to monitor your dial up connections.
the way to tell what your speed is is to download a large binary file and seed what type of speed you get. Text and surfing is not a good measure cause they can be compressed and speeds of 15K are possiable.
Below are some screen shots as to what i'm talking about.

As you can tell by the first and last screen shots there is a slight difference in what netscape reports and what your machine reports. As a rule the bandwidth a browser takes up is noticeable !! Thats why some FTP sites will not allow web browsers in but you can go there with a ftp client and have no problems.

Have fun and surf hard !!!
