Jutsu - do
Strike - block
Attack - defend
External - internal
etc….
There's got to be a million more. Any ideas?

Re: false dichotomy
false nails it .
contrary/complementry ?
relativity ?
yin/yang ?
ps the only way to get the do is through the jutsu IMNSHO, otherwise your just engaging in self-flagellation
(that should spice up the conversation)

Re: false dichotomy
That's got to be one of my favorite logical fallacies to expose in a heated online debate.
Let me ponder that a bit.

Re: false dichotomy
Here's a multichotomy that I like to consider as I do what I do in our martial arts world.
- Bill
- Art
. - Do or lifestyle
. - Sport -- Judo, BJJ, Boxing, MMA, Kendo, Fencing, wrestling, etc.
. - Exercise/fitness/health
. - Self-defense
. - Warfare
. - Cross-training -- Martial arts is useful for anyone in any sport - particularly if you fall a lot or are involved in a contact sport.
. - Psychological diversion -- My first Uechi teacher - at the time an English grad of Harvard - was always fascinated and frustrated by how many engineers were in his UVa Uechi classes vs. the fish he liked to swim with (English majors, poets, writers, philosophers). We needed to leave the books and go smash something.

Re: false dichotomy

nothing is ever one thing and labels never quite fit
most of the time me never get to the topic and just argue the language , its all a story of a real experience , never quite communicable , and we all get it wong , it's the human condition.
the labels are limited the people involved sometimes less so
