suspect email

Post by Lori »

I maintain a hotmail account as my email of "record" for web-browsing, forums, etc. partially for privacy, partially so my inbox does not get flooded with the junk email resulting from wherever that particular "public" email address has been collected, sold or whatever. Every day I receive a flood of junk email which I keep adding to the "block senders" list - though I suppose there are mass email spam programs that create 1000's of new email addresses to send this junk from it will be a never ending battle... that however is not the reason for this post.

The email in question came as a BCC - with the FROM listed as my own email address! Strange enough - and then the subject line was "Did I do something wrong?" - I had received an email spam like this once from an email address I did not recognize and deleted it as is my regular procedure. This one however, got the best of my curiosity, with the BCC - the from and the weird subject that seemed personal in nature. So, I opened it. Noticing a big colored font saying "Click here" I realized it was yet more email junk, and clicked to return to my inbox, but not before the browser showed that little flashing message: "Downloading from site 122.334.555" (not the actual number, but it looked just like web pages usually do when downloading graphics - so at first I wasn't too concerned until I noticed that the message did not chage at all - no graphics included at all even though it was in html format. The entire text of the message was:

I did not click on either link - by that time I was really nervous about what was downloaded onto my machine. I have McAffee virus protection on - with everything possible activated, but I'm not as well versed as I should be with the five hundred sub sub sub sub sub directories used for all of the downloaded files coming from the internet.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated - I would like to find out what the heck this file was - and get rid of it if possible.

Thanks,
Lori
