How Your Child Can Safely Practice Martial Arts at Home

Post by emattson »

By Jennifer Scott

If you or your child is studying martial arts, you already know the many benefits that come with it. And chances are you don’t want your youngster getting hurt practicing at home. That’s where building a home studio comes in. Not only will a home studio help your family stay active, it could also prove useful long-term from a financial standpoint.

Regular exercise is important for both physical and mental health, and the convenience of a home studio can make it easier for you and your family to maintain your regular workouts and continue to reap these benefits on days you aren’t in an organized session. To help you get started, Uechi-ryu Karate-do Club has put together some advice and resources about creating a martial arts studio at home.

Location, Location, Location

Walk the house and determine which space is best for the studio, whether it’s the basement, spare room, or garage. Consider the cost of converting the space. If the basement is the optimal location, and it’s unfinished, expect to spend between $11,036 and $29,286 for a complete renovation, and less for less extensive work. If the garage is chosen, you may need to heat and/or cool it, depending on your location.

Clearing Out Space

Once the location is chosen, clear the space for it.

  • Start by decluttering the space where you plan to put your studio. Completely emptying the space will give you a blank slate to work from.
  • Donate, sell and recycle unwanted items after decluttering.
Invest in a Home Repair App

A home repair app is a valuable tool when creating a martial arts studio at home, as it provides easy access to local professionals like HVAC experts. After all, proper heating, ventilation, and air conditioning are crucial for ensuring a comfortable environment during physical training. The app allows you to quickly schedule repairs, installations, or upgrades, ensuring that your studio remains functional and safe. It also helps you manage other essential repairs, making it a convenient way to handle all aspects of your home studio setup efficiently.

Putting the Studio Together

When your space is ready for the studio, it’s time to make your vision a reality.

  • Research different types of lighting, such as natural, LED, and fluorescent, and determine what your martial arts studio needs.
  • Rubber floors are pretty much a staple in professional martial arts studios, and your home studio is no exception. Plan to spend about $10/square foot.
  • Few things are more foundational to a good martial arts practice than a grappling dummy, so make sure you find one that meets you and your child’s needs.
  • Freestanding heavy bags are also worth considering because they incorporate elements of both grappling dummies and hanging heavy bags.
Other Factors to Consider

Keep in mind that your child will need proper gear for training and practicing their sport. This includes a uniform and protective sparring gear, such as guards for their mouth, shins and hands. For conditioning, you could purchase a jump rope and possibly weights for strength training.

There are plenty of advantages to building a martial arts studio at home, including an increased home value. Start by making room for your studio, and get everything you need to make it come to life. In no time, you and your child will be in full swing in the studio!

Personally, I feel that renovating a room is rather excessive. A child is at a age when trying to figure out his interest. It's possible that after spending five figures on the perfect karate studio, the kid may find out he prefers dancing or something else. A subscription to a karate studio may be the best option to start. There, he can try out different techniques and equipment to see which ones suits his needs the best.
