Junior classes

Post by ged17 »

I have just started running a junior class in Tae kwon do with another instructor. I am after any hints that people may have for making junior classes "fun". Does anyone have any good activities or games that let you teach skills and drills without always having students in lines moving up and down the hall?

We are targetting the 6-10 year old age bracket and classes last for 1 hour. Initially we are aiming just to give the kids a fun introduction to martial arts rather than necessarily prepare them for belt gradings (that can come later if hey are interested).

Any suggestions on things to try or avoid would be appreciated.

Dear Ged17,

Good luck in your new class. My suggestion for you being both a public school educator as well as a dojo owner is to change activities often. Kids' attention spans are about 10-15 minutes max. at this age. You need to move on. Plus, never take anything too seriously from this age. Just have fun.

Good Advice from Sensei Murphy!

To keep things interesting, go to this link-

and try a few of these.
