Women & Men: Different Fist II

Never thought I would use the internet to look at pics of fist Image. Anyway, seeing the shoken leads me to ask how many prefer to support the index finger with the thumb at the knuckle or prefer the thumb supporting between the knuckles? (just barely above the end index knuckle) In outer words should you allow it to colapse after it strikes the target? I have been taught both ways and prefer the position that allows it to colapse after impact as it would not only protect the finger if it strikes something solid, but I also find it easier to make the entire fist solid.

Thank you Mr Mattson;
The sequence is jumbled so I will explain:
#1 shows the fingers curled into the pads at the edge of the palm, resulting in #4; the "Square" or "man's" fist.
#3 shows the fingers curled into the palm,resulting in #2, the "pointed" or as Dana referred to it"women's" fist.
#5, of course the Shoken, just wanted to show the positioning I had posted earlier.
