Hello all

I have never been in any street fight, male or female but I wondered what you think you would do or have done if you were attacked by a woman?

Would your technique or tactics change?

Does the hair pulling and clawing with nails really normally happen?

Just curious...

Hi Melanie,

Are you the same Melanie who wrote the article on the link in your signature? If so then I hope you're still enjoying your new found love of training!

I saw several fights of women on women in junior high and high school - and most recently at a bowling alley. And while the scratching seems to be optional, hair grabbing is a favorite technique that is usually used first by the more violent of the two women fighting.

Hair is a great controlling option against men or women. I think the most effective methods I've seen are ones that use the hair to whip the neck - which turns the body. Depending on how this is used it can set you up for strikes, neck cranks, or controlling holds.

I don't think I could ever say "if I was attacked by this kind of person I'd do X technique. It has more to do with the kind of situation around the attack, the type of attack (verbal, physical - both) weapons or no weapons, etc.

On a final note however - the fight that ended most quickly in junior high was the one where one girl reached over and pulled the other's pierced earring straight downward - splitting the ear lobe. Image

Never been in a 'girl fight' (hair pulling and nail slashing) but I've heard of quite a few. My ex-neighbour, who is a bundle of anger ready to explode at any moment, fought like this. She has been arrested twice recently for beating up two different gals (assaulting one girl one month and the other girl the next month). According to the newspaper, she grabbed each gal by the back of the hair and rammed their head into a fence post in one case and the ground in another. All the while she was kicking at her vitim's legs and scratching at their faces with her free hand.

My friend recounted a nasty 'girl fight' he saw down in OZ. It was a giant brawl with a handful of girls involved and then the surrounding guys jumped in. He said afterwards, when he was reflecting on what happened, that the girls were scratching and pulling hair, while the guys were jumping in and kicking/punching anything that moved.

I would like to think that my tactics would change fighting another gal, but honestly I don't know. If I knew (or suspected) that the attack was going to happen, then I would have time to come up with a plan. A surprise hair grabbing/biting/nail slashing attack, dunno how I'd react.

I've never really trained in techniques to fight off these types of attacks. Most have been geared towards 'if a guy grabs you' scenario. More of the wrist grabs or grabs from behind. I've tried out some different techniques for hair grabs, biting, and finger nail fighting, but nothing serious enough that it would be automatic if this type of situation arose.

Do you think that this should be addressed Colleen? Or do you think the current training taken for defences against men is sufficient?

Another scenario for you is what if this 'mad' woman was attacking a friend or loved one too?

Yep..thats me...

You know I am delighted to finally get some one respond about hair pulling! To me it is the most obvious thing to go for with a women. "Most" women have enough hair to grab hold of and the few fights I have seen this is the first place they have gone for.

Hoped you like the article...but don't worry...I won't be giving up me day job just yet Image

Yes, I believe all sorts of self-defense scenarios should be taught, including fighting 'girl fights'. However, I can understand why they aren't addressed very often in most MA classes. Correct me if I'm being naive here, if I get into a cat fight with a gal, then I'm only going to be a bit scratched/bloody afterwards. Minor injuries and maybe a bruised ego. If a guy attacks me, then I'm in a whole he** of a lot more trouble. That takes the danger to a whole new level.

The main bulk of my defense training is aimed at males (bad males, not the good males out there Image ) because they're the ones who are more likely to rape or kill me.

Still, I would love to do training in the 'girl fight' area. Especially the hair grabbing area, my hair's waist length and would be really easy to grab.

Hair grabbing is definetly a 'guy attacking girl' technique too. I know I've seen a lot of schools that have hair grabbing defense techniques. My first school did, which was pretty amusing as a lot of the students had shaved or very short hair.
